well ive searched plenty but i can never get a clear answer on this..id like to change my shocks to bilsteins..but i heard theyre was a grooved version or something like that? i dont entirely know what it means to be grooved...one thing i know is that with the grooved shock you have some adjustability of ride height? [confused] where can i get grooved bilstein shocks for the front of my car only for now..im FWD 1.8t manual...anyhelp would be great [up]

They have more notches cut into the shock body so that you move the perches and adjust the height. I believe www.neuspeed.com sells them.

ive got the neuspeed kit. don't bother, they suck. the adjustability is a JOKE. the front adjustability is useless, the highest setting is barely high enough to drive on a real road [about a 3/4" tire/fender gap w/ 225/45/17]. the rears i have all the way down and the car set with a slight rake:

http://picasaweb.google.com/thejimrose/Audi/photo#5002607877829623826

with the rears set to the 3rd highest of 4 notches:
http://picasaweb.google.com/thejimrose/Audi/photo#5093128633003054066

yea.. THAT's useful adjustability. whatever asshat designed them didn't bother to correspond the front / rear adjustability at all.

ps i have a set i'm selling, CHEAP! =)

[seriously. i want stasis's]

doesnt sound too bad..my car sits a bit higher up front..i think..i want a small bit of rake but not much..what springs are you on? your car looks pretty high..especially the back..my back fender sits on my tires right now..and my front is about a finger or less gap..i want to go lower in the front though..i like slammed cars..

i bought mine from neuspeed. it just depends on what springs you have for the adjustability to be to your liking. i have eibach springs and without the bilsteins, it left the rear a little higher than the front giving it that raked look. once i put the adj. bilsteins on, it lowered both the front and back the same as much (on the lowest settings) leaving me with the raked look. ive seen adj. blisteins with H&R race springs and there isnt a bit of rake. if i remember correctly, your car is already pretty low, so you will be content with a perch or two lower on the bilsteins than it already is

here are two bad pictures

Grooved ones means you can have more height adj. On my B5 with 18s, I have it 2 slot down in the front and 3 or 4 in the rear. I forgot, I believe the rear the groove are closer apart or vice versa. You can get them at neuspeed and ecs tuning. Also AWE have them too but just the normal Bilstein but u can add additional grooves in.

i dont believe those are grooved. and to be honest, unless they are brand new, i personally wouldnt buy used suspension. also, i dont believe you can keep the warranty on the shocks once they switch hands.

edit: here is a pic of my REAR grooved shocks. the grooved fronts are like the ones you showed but have the perches like you see on top of the rear shock in the pic i posted. see the littls rings? those are the grooves

'stock black front side thing' ? that's a great description... =/

if you mean the lower spring perch for the spring, then yes you need to reuse the stock one:
