View Full Version : Starting in on the cam chain tensioner today... Few Questions.

The only thing I am slightly confused about is step 1 of my instructions:

"Align Timing Marks: Rotate motor to align timing marks on cams, timing belt and crank. You don't need to wrench the crank shaft pulley, you can rock the car in 1st or 2nd gear. You can also check the crank shaft pulley using a flash light."

Does this mean the engine has to be a TDC? I dont know what to make of this...

Also, how does one manually crank the engine to ensure timing is correct after the install?

Sorry about being such a n00b about this stuff, I just want to make sure that I understand everything correctly before i start in.

Get a ratchet and rotate the cam by hand. Don't remember how big the bolt is, 17mm IIRC.

The bolt on the cam is a 16mm, and I would rotate the engine with a ratchet on the crank bolt, not the cam. Yes, the engine should be at TDC when you start the job, and yes, you should check timing manually after the install.

There are arrows at the cam chain The arrow on the cams should line up w/ the square blocks on the head itself
