I have both painted in flat black...it looks great at first, but can chip easily. Be sure to take your time sanding and use a good primer.

use plasticoat or any kind of plastic primer promoter. otherwise it will always chip, even if you sand it. i sanded it and used a plastic promoter and its great.

i like black trim with chrome rings.

Can you just buy it with a black trim and chrome rings from anywhere?

I pulled the rings off and scotchbrited them until they had a nice brushed finish. They are somewhere between brushed aluminum and brushed titanium. This was a very cool little effect until the rings got stuck in the side of an idiot's car last January.

I did the exact same thing. It looks hot. Tried sanding and painting, and it chipped like hell.

Then I used PLASTI-DIP. It's the perfect shade of flat black, and it hasn't chipped at all in the year I've had it on. And if it ever does, it's no problem to touch-up.

This is what you want...they sell it at most Lowes: http://www.k1cra.com/catalog/product.aspx?productID=725
