This is on a 1999.5 A4 Avant 1.8t AEB

Yup, tis true. It didn't cost anything and didn't take long. I followed the S4 keyless antenna thread (http://audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145686) and took pics of my own. The stereo on the piano gave up it's cheapie wire radio antenna for the benefit of fine automobile modification.

Antenna reception was previously spotty at the end of my driveway which is only about 20 feet long. I could arm or disarm but couldn't maintain a solid enough signal to put the windows up. I had to be within 10 feet to work the windows. After adding the antenna I tried it across the street and it worked perfectly. I walked a house over and it still works. At the point it stopped working reliably it was about 75 feet away. It would do the windows from about 60 feet. Range will be best from the rear since that is where the antenna is. I'll play with front reception tomorrow at work.

The wire pulled down and about 4" stripped off the black striped cover.

Spliced the wires and heat shrink wrapped the joint.

The wire routing around to the rear bumper support.

Here the wire is shown tucked up and around the rear bumper support. I looped it through the little openings in the bumper and zip tied the end in place.

Across the street and a house down the remote works fine. The Audi is the one on the right and in the garage. The reflective white rectangles are the license plates.

Good job man! I think I will be doing this soon.

Is it a 99.5+ / S4 thing to have the antenna located under the car like that?

IIRC the older models have the antenna in the rear pillar of the car by the back window?

Hahahah, why unlock your car from that far away anyways? It relocks itself after after about 15 seconds IIRC... So if you lock it from like 60 ft away, if you walk about 2 mph. The doors will lock on themselves again and you would just have to unlock it AGAIN!!

you could open/close your windows from a distance

its better than it not unlocking/locking from 10 feet away![:D]

Yeah, and if you cant remember if you locked the car or not you have to walk all the way back to your car to check it rather than just pressing the button across the parking lot..

I have a third floor office that overlooks the parking lot. I've never been able to close the sunroof or open the windows without running down to the lot. Now I should be able to do it from above.

The extended range is very nice. After all, what is the point of a remote when you have to be within arm's reach of the car for it to work. If I had to stand a foot away from my TV it's remote control to work I'd be pissed.

mines 98.5 in the cpillar, i extended the antenna and ran it along the roof line in the back of the car and my fob has to be within about 2' of the rear c pillar to get it to work. it's SFA. i't would be nice to be able to unlock my car from in FRONT of my car. grumble grumble.. pos audi keyless thingie. guess i'll have to re-fix it.

i just went out to my car to see if i could find the wire, but i couldnt find that wire. all i could find was a little yellow/tan tube, and it didnt come out of the hole like you showed(in fact, i couldnt find any hole like that)

i think that it must be under the seat, but i heard it is supposed to be in the bumper like you showed.

I have a 99.5 sedan....would the wire be in the same location?

I just checked on my 99.0 sedan, and where that wire is in your pictures, i have a tube instead. The tube connects to the gas intake (housing) behind the cap, it drains any spillage.

Sounds like this is a 99.5+ thing.

*update*
I can put the windows up and down from the 3rd floor mezzanine but not from my desk which is closer. I think the office's window tint kills it.

offroader1006

very likely, tint will kill the range.

active give me an idea how yours turned out.

Where is the signal antenna located in a 97 a4?

sweet! i have hope again. I have been wanting to do this since my 98 but could not find the dam antenna. Once i lost that i got a 01 and thought this one will be under the seat but no! I found the c pillar DIY thread got excited only to go to my car and be disappointed by a airbag not a light. Checking tomorrow.I cant stand standing next to the door and waiting for the windows to go up. That does not look nearly as cool as walking away and your windows going up :)

-Never mind. I looked over the thread . Thought it looked like the cheep radio wire i have laying by my computer!
