Trouble with avatar

I am having trouble uploading a custom avatar. I have resized the image within the correct size limits, and have changed it to a jpeg format. It will still not let me upload and says "not a valid image file." I am using a mac, is this affecting the upload? Any ideas? I have searched and cannot find any clues.

Covert it to a GIF file.

I did get it to work as a jpeg. I just had to title the file *.jpg. Thanks for the help, it got me on the right track.
