I have always wondered which generation handles better, and goes around a track faster considering all mods equal, suspension, swaybars, brakes, and equal or comparable hp. I cant really come to a conclusion because all the cars have their own advantages (b5 lighter weight)(b6 stiffer chasis but more weight) (b7 stiffest chasis but heaviest weight). I would prefer people with first hand experience but any info would be helpful.

if all put out the same whp, i think the b5 would be fastest.

If they all have equal power and mods, then they'd perform the same. It'd all be up to the driver.

I like to think of it as, if I had $45,000, and I was going to buy a b5, b6, or b7, which one could be made the fastest for that amount of money? [:)]

Actually, in your comparison, it would seem that the one with the best aerodynamics would win.

um, i own both a b5 and a b6. the b5 has less power stock, but it feels so much lighter. on twisties, even though it's auto, the b5 just feels more nimble. the b6 is a 5-speed, but you can definitely feel how much bigger the car got.

if you give them all equal power, the b5 will win. again, less weight. however, the b6 has a lot more safety features. and it's just bigger.

if you had $45k, the b5 would be the easiest to make faster. i bought my b5 for $6.5k. that would left me with $38.5k for modifications.

my b6 cost me $17k. that leaves me $28k in modifications.

think about that and figure out which one is gonna be faster.

Exactly. [:D]

Wait a second, you only paid six dollars for your b5?!?!?

HAHAHAHA. Oh man. That was the best (and definately the funniest) thing I have ever read.

[hail] B5 for the win. Just personal preference.

This all HIGHLY depends on what you mean by "all mods equal". If you are talking about how much power you can gain by doing that EXACT same mods to each generation, then there's NO question that the B7 would come out more powerful than both the B5 and the B6. Maybe not necessarily better in the handling dept., though, but considering the suspension and steering of the B7 is all based on the B6 S4 and NOT the B6 A4...

Hell if i had $45k to get any car this is what i would get/do:

1998.5 A4 1.8T (Pearl/Mayo color w/ Tan & Navy interior)
OEM RS4 Widebody
2871r Eliminator Kit w/ Utronics (Renn-Art)
EvoMS FMIC
Custom 3" Exhaust w/ Magnaflow and an ATP VES Essembly
H-Sport Sways
Stasis Motor Sport Suspension with 800/1000 springs
Stasis Center Diff & Rear Diff
18" Superturismo GT w/ Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R (245/40/18)
B6 S4 Front Seats (RECARO in tan)
2.8 Tranny Swap
Monobloc4 - 355mm (14") BBK w/ B7 S4 rear
South Bend Performance FE series Stage 5 Clutch w/ Cryo Treatment
1-Piece OEM Headlights (Not CC) w/ 12000k xenon kit
And all supporting Mods (I got lazy)

But i think this would still come under the $45,000 limit

If i had that i wouldn't give a shit if someone was faster. It would be my dream car.

I think I'd do something like that ^ but make it a 2l stroker with a full 2871 turbo. And some nice BBS 3 piece rims for street, with some O.Z. ultraleggara's with R compounds for the track.

Oh yeah, and water/meth injection!

Hmmm, $45k to put into a car... I'd get a 7er and call it a day.

For 45k I'd put a hitch on my Avant and spend the rest on a trailer and Ariel Atom or Radical.

Having 3 B5's (one wrecked) in my possession, as well as a B6... the B5 is the best "bang for the buck" in going fast. The B5 is also much lighter and nimble, and feels more "fun to drive" compared to the B6 and B7. The B5 (especially AEB's) are much easier to tune. The powertrain's on the B5 is also much better built than the later cars. Both AEB and ATW share the same strong bottom end, while the ATW is simply the small port and DBW version of the ATW, along with a more advanced ECU. The AWM is the weaker of the motors, and uses the same internals as the AMB (B6) on the bottom end, as well as a small-port VVT head. The AWM's are found in the 2001's, and the powertrain is very much like a B6 (minus ECU functions and fueling system).

The B6 (and B7 which is an identical chassis) has a much more rugged and stiffer chassis, and would handle better than the B5 w/ the same suspension setup. The cars have less body-roll and flex, but also adds to the weight factor. The B6 is a much more comfortable and smooth ride. The B6 also uses a non-return fuel system, which also adds complexity in the tuning (without a FPR at the rail). The B7 has a completely NEW generation motor, which I havn't gotten into yet. But a regularly chipped B7 will make as much as most K04'd 1.8T's.

My choice? I love Audi's...I love Turbos... and I love them all. [:)]

For $45k, I would have at least FIVE B5's... from mildly modified to full-on race car. [:)]

I bought 3 B5's for about half the price of my B6 new. [:D]

if i had to stick with the a4, i'd use the $45k and do a full rs4 conversion..maybe s4 conversion if rs4 costs over $45k. engine, tranny, everything! even air bags!

i bought my b5 when it was new so it was the price of a b7 :)

i test drove a B7 2.0T sport package while i was getting my oil changed at the dealer. the fuel injection or whatever it has is definately noticable. on the highway, in 5th gear, you tap the excelerator and it picks up instantly. it made my B5 2.8 feel broken, seriously. i immediately got the impression that the B7 is a very solid, excellent ride and at least feels feels quicker right out of the box than a B5. by the time i get rid of my B5, a B7 will probably be in my price range, and i'm looking forward to that.

I assume your talking about direct injection. DI allows you to run higher compression while still boosting. Higher compression = better throttle response. I haven't had the luxury of riding in a B7 but I drove a GTi and bone stock it felt quicker than my chipped B5. I think that's due to the throttle response though. Either way the 2.0T is a fantastic motor. I can't wait to see more people with BTs on that motor.
