View Full Version : Horrible Track Times

Ok, I went to a local track recently that is a 1/8 mile drag and got some really shi**y times. I got a best of 9.49 in March with only APR stage 1 and Carbonio CIA. I just returned to the same track this weekend now with a e-code TP and full APR cat-back exhaust with the stage 2 re-flash and got best of 10.21. WTF !![headbang]
I have noticed a lack of power in the A$$ dyno since I got the TP and exhaust. What could be the problem. [confused] Now I know there are alot of factors like bad lauch, missed shifts, maybe wheather that play parts. But the lauches were better this time no missed shift and the wheather is obviously warmer.

what were your 60 foot times.

I'm right there with you... running 9.60 with APR stg2 93 octane program, testpipe, neuspeed exhaust (downpipe included) with a TIP.
It's odd - the testpipe and exhaust makes it feel like the car is putting down a little more power due to how the acceleration feels...well, smoother, not so much quicker. It's hard to explain. I really think my car felt overall faster without the testpipe and exhaust (wish I had run it before). The boost / acceleration was more 'jerky' as opposed to smooth and constant, now. It could all just be in my head...
At any rate, I think I'm going to put the cat back on and run it again and see how much slower/faster the car is.
All in all, a 9.6 should be what a stock A4 should run, IMO.. so I'm in the same boat as you --- "WTF"? My 60' times were 2.2x (x being under 5)
Weather does play a big factor - we're all familiar with how much stronger our cars feel at 65 degrees compared to 85 degrees. The cool, denser air is met with more fuel therefore more power. The engine 'detunes' itself as things warm up. It's even more noticeable in the turbo cars compared to the naturally aspirated. It was in the high 70's when i ran. when a left the track at 9:00pm and it had cooled to 68 degrees the car was noticeable stronger. Wish I had a chance to run it at that temp.

I am not sure what all my 60 ft times were but out of 5 runs I remember a time of 1.4 and that was the run that I got 10.21. I was upset because 10.2 and 9.4 are a huge difference. So naturally I was pissed.
In the cars defense it was about 50 degrees warmer then the last time I ran, but my 60 ft times were in the 1.95-2.14 range so like I said before WTF!!![headbang]

a 1.9 60ft should put u at around 9.0-9.2, 2.2's are good for mid 9's. As for the 1.4 numbers u read that was your reaction time. Did u see a 5.8 -5.9 @ the 660' mark??Turn the ESP off/launch @ 4k( maybe u did) and consider lightweight wheels if dragging is important to ya...I drag at irwindale 1/8 mile track here in So CA and for 20 bux its cool but no where near the rush i get tracking with NASA..the fun is in the corners baby

Exorcet, we should pair up and head to Irwindale and represent the B7!! [up]

Absolutely! I see you're running high 13's -- manual, right? See.. I have pretty much the same mods as you (sans BBK) and ran 9.6 at Irwindale (which translates to high 14's / 15 flat).
I have a recurring CEL for 'Fuel Pressure out of Range - Low' that's coming on and off. Power feels inconsistent lately (sometimes it boosts great, other times feels like drastic heat soak and no power). I really want to get this fixed before I run.. so hopefully I'll have the dealer fix it this week.
I'm golfing next thursday, you want to head out on June 14th?? Sounds like I also gotta get hooked up with NASA - bet there's some fun events!

in a different forum i saw that people were saying their car is slower with a testpipe and exahust. Is this true? I am about to order an exhaust and testpipe. Should i hold off? I would really like to know if the car is actually slower with the exhaust and testpipe. why are people saying this?

What is an avg time for a quattro 6sp with APR 93. I have an Avant so I can expect to add a tenth or 2. Just curious to know what it should be running.

I used to get mid 9's with the APR 93 program, now with the TP & exhaust I am getting low to mid 10's I also have the reoccuring CEL problem so that might be the issue, I also read on another forum that the PCV valve could drop boost as well.
I got to say guys I am losing my faith with this car, I love it, but DAMN !!!

no, something else is wrong with their cars... an exhaust and TP will only add power since it is freeing up room for the turbo

I know that in theory it should, but it feels slower " ass dyno ", and the numbers confirm.

I went to Irwindale when my car was FULLY stock. MY car was running 10.2 on the 1/8 track. Best time was 10.29X . I was disapointed considering my friend's Single Cam Civic hatch was running around the same time as I was, but I'm down for a Irwindale run. =)

Remember your friends civic probably weighs about 13-1500 lbs lighter then our A4's if not more, get a chip and you'll be running mid to high 9's.

Well no doubt about the weight difference... But It's embarrassing that a single cam vtec can keep up with a turbo car.

It shouldn't be embarassing. That's the only reason civics and cars like that can be relatively fast. It's simple physics.

Sorry to be a jerk, but why drag race a German auto anyway? Buy a piece of shit Camaro or something if dragging is your game.

I saw a stock B7 run a 10.2 at Irwindale a couple weeks ago.. that's funny. At least they're consistent. [:D]

Why do Road & Track, Car and Driver, etc always test 0-60 times for 'sport' cars? Seriously.. who gives a crap about straight line acceleration, right?
I'd take a 120hp Civic that could pull 1.0g on a skidpad over an Audi S4 any day, wouldn't you? Acceleration and monster horsepower is for pussies.

Anyway exorcet, did you happen to know if the B7 that ran at Irwindale was 6 speed, tip, or CVT? I would like to know. =) And I weigh roughly 220lbs. I gutted my spare at that time when I ran it though. I only live like 2 exits off of Irwindale speedway. =)

Well hell the I am what i eat!!jk...If everything is sound with ur car then your trap speed should be 75-76mph. I get my best times when i powershift 1-2 @ 6200rpm, 2-3rd 'bout 5900, itz all over on the top of 3rd as u know. Do not shift at redline. think it really comes down to me blasting sum border brother ranchera muzik when i stage[:D] .Pm me if uwant the lowdown on NASA..prepare to heel n toe...

Well then I am what i eat...burp..If everything is sound with ur car u should be trapping 75-76 mph @ 1/8 mile. I got my best times powershifting 1-2 @ 6200, 2-3 @ 5900 and finishing 9 sec. later just shy of redine. U know i feel itz sumthing to do with me blasting border brotha ranchera muzik when staging...jk.. I got so excited i farted/boosted on my bestess run(Famoso Raceway)..PM me if u want to talk NASA..prepare to heel n toe to make her go.......

I have got alot of responses for this post but no real answers, can anyone explain why or give previous experience knowledge on why my car is not boosting like it should, it it noticably weaker in excereration. WTF[headbang]

good lord....im pulling 9.4s at 5800 ft....u guys have the luxury of oxygen!
keep running the track and shift at different points...as mentioned above, knowing when you are spooled out, or more importantly, how to maximise the spool of your 3rd gear pull will be most important in the 1/8mi.
i run the 1/4mi because it is the only thing reasonably close to me where i can get my fix (closest track is a 2hr drive away, i get there a few times a season).
1/4 or 1/8 mile is not an accurate demonstration of a few things, and since the distance is so short, its a drivers game...consistency of launch, shift, etc. it just takes some trips out to the track to get used to the car in those circumstances.
how do you launch? u need trac. control off, and you def need to be pushing higher RPMs when you dump the clutch. the other key factor is launching on an RPM upswing. keep in mind, your turbo will NOT spool far beyond 0 boost/vac even if you are holding constant RPM until the car is actually moving (in fact, it will go back to nearly idle vac pressure if you are holding a constant RPM at launch)...so you want to dump your clutch as you are mashing the gas to get nearly instant spool (and so you wont bog the launch)...you can get the car off the line nicely that way (and at first your RTs will suffer a lot, but you WILL get better with lots of pulls).
just some advice.

Might be that Diverter Valve..i would look into that for boost leakage

Hehe..can't agree with you more - hopefully my sarcasm was not lost on him.
I was trapping 74mph. The 9.6 pissed me off because it 'calculates' to a 15.0 quarter, which I think sucks for my mods. Maybe it's not an accurate translation I'd really like to get it out on a 1/4 track.
I have a TIP, so I was powerbraking at about 2800rpm (getting 2.2 60ft times), ESP off, short-shifting (paddles) 1st to 2nd at ~6300rpm (shift occured at 6600 approx) because I did notice the 'runout' my first run when i let it shift at redline. I also shifted 2nd a little higher at ~65/6600rpm. Maybe I shouldn't run 2nd so far out (again, TIP will obviously be a bit different than stick). I only got 3 runs so I didn't get to experiment too much.
I'll PM you regarding NASA.
Thanks!

Thanks Denver, and everyone who had any advice. I know the DV is still in working order because I had Audi check it out the last time I took it in for a service. I am not sure what the altitude is here but hopefully [rolleyes] I will start running 9.4's again when I figure this shiiznit out. I am taking my car back to Audi this week hopefully.
