I just purchsed a B7 A4 this week. I really like the car, but I am curious. When I punch it from a stop, it almost feels like the car is slipping. I am not sure. I have the FWD version, not quattro. Is this normal? Once the car is moving, there is power and it shifts fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you describe the "slipping"? Are you sure it's not your front wheels slightly spinning for traction? New tires can be a bit slippery until broken in.
You have the CVT which is a pretty responsive trans and doesn't lose as much power as a standard torque converter automatic like the auto in the A4 quattro (tiptronic).

it is probably turbo lag, once you hit 3-4K rpms the car feels better

There is no way that the tires are spinning, there is no way near enough power for that. I kind of expected turbo lag as the car is more responsive when the rpm's are built up, it just seems excessive. I was expecting more power from a stop than that.
Would chipping the car help with that? Also, would it viod my warranty?

you prolly have the CVT Tranny dont ya!! i have that problem too... so do all of us with this "7" speed tranny.. Its just a delay before any power kicks in from a dead stop...
Someone said it was for a smoother ride... I THINK IT SUCKS AND I WANT IT GONE!

turbo lag.. the chip will reduce a little bit of the lag.. and you will start spinning the tires once chipped.. and yes.. it will void the warranty

Its not turbo lag(with the stupid CVT).. I'll show ya why:
From dead stop it has a delay.. your prolly under 1000 rpm.. Hmm maybe turbo lag
If your car is rolling and under 1000 rpm youll TAKE OFF(in comparison).. Maybe not turbo lag
This tells me its the tranny... i mean this is just my opinion ..
I took my car to Audi and they say its just fine!!
I WISH*** this could be fixed!! Maybe the chip reprograms the Crap Tranny???

That's odd to me, because when I test drove the CVT I really liked it and I thought it was quite responsive, UNLIKE the tiptronic auto which I think is very sluggish. Now, I remember spinning the front wheels on a test in a FWD A4, but I don't remember if it was the CVT or the manual?
But, test show the FWD CVT to be as quick and some say quicker than the 6psd manual.
I felt about as much lag in the CVT as I do in my 6spd. which is pretty minimal. Has the CVT changed since it's intro in the FWD A4?

A rolling start can still show some "lag". Still, the 2.0T is much better with much less lag than the 1.8T.
Maybe you should give your CVT some time to break in and adapt to your driving.
Have you tried it in "manual" mode?
Remember, any car with a small 4 cylinder will take a little bit to start moving. The A4 is no lightweight Civic.
Did you test other CVT's to check any differences?
Also, make sure your AC isn't on, that zaps a LOT of low rpm take off power in this 2.0T

So, this 7 Speed with paddle shifters is a CVT? I wondered why it shifted so smooth. I completely forgot they had this. I thought with the ability to shift through the "gears" is was not CVT.

Just to clear up a few things about CVT...it is used in the FWD Auto Transmission in our cars and uses a pulley system to change the gear ratio. This mean that it actually doesnt have gears but just appears to have it and instead has "shift" feel. If you look at your RPMs when you keep a constant acceleratin you will know what im talking about. CVTs have been said to have a quicker get up and go then even a 6spd manual, however the CVT Auto is def. a much weaker transmission

Another thing, does this happen when you are in "D" or "S".

In D when I tried it but Im assuming that it must be in S to because its not like the pulleys turn off when your in sport mode. This whole CVT A4 thing confused me for a while because with CVT I truly believed that the car was actually shifting when in fact it was just an illusion lol [rolleyes]

wait a second. i cant belive im asking myself this about 5 months after having the car. but . how do i know if i have CVT or not. PLease tell me its ONLY on the FWD cars becuase i have quattro. I have an AT tip tho. and i know sumtimes ill be crusin and i push in the as a bit more and the rPms will go higher but in the same gear and i think that the car is shifting but its not and what u siad in your post about that made me wonder.

I dont think so..
**Maybe i was drunk but turn off ESP!!!!
Holy shit the delay went away...
THE DELAY WAS GONE WHEN I TURNED OF THE ESP STUFF!!

no dude ur alright lol quattro is tip transimision it is only fwd cars.

after all these posts, that was clearly the most likely problem to me. if you're not familiar w/ VAG products, ESP can make you scratch your head. turn it off to accelerate, but turn it back on after that just to be safe.
and this car/engine in the fwd version makes plenty of power to spin the tires in first and possibly second.

I noticed that if u floor the accelerator upon the initial launch, the car takes longer to react as compared to easing onto the gas. Also you could try letting the car roll a little bit before you get on the gas to get everything moving; and yes the chip will reduce the turbo lag greatly. I had my car ''chipped'' at the dealership and they told me it wouldn't void the warranty.

I know I have a CVT, but I'm still confused on how Continue Varible Transmission works.

I have a CVT also and the lag is pretty noticeable rather in "D" or "S"...
Since I'm chipped I have less lag but it's still there. Every time you start from a stop no matter how hard you floor it you'll have this lag unless you rev it to 2K RPM's and launch.
And FYI before I be chipped I never got to spin the wheels on a launch...
Peace

So, now with the ESP/traction off your car is responding faster.
Good. The tire slip at launch was causing the power to drop.
The ESP system will adjust your throttle when it senses wheel slip.
So, on hard launch, if your front wheels start to spin the ESP will modulate the throttle for you LOWERING power. You might have your foot to the floor, but the ECU makes the decision under those conditions.
You must be pretty new to modern car technology and how it works and feels.

The wheels do spin. However, traction control stops it quickly by modulating your throttle for you. That's the "lag" you guys are talking about.
Yes, you need to turn ESP/traction control off for hard launches.
You should have some more wheel spin, but the power will stay and you can control your launch with your throttle better.
