Hey... so i finally gave up on tried to find parts do do a double din conversion and just decided to stick my AVIC-D3 into my single din panel on my pre-facelift a4. So i took a couple of pictures and decided to make a little write-up for those who are interested...

so anyways, this is what it looked like at the start

I already had a flip-screen deck in there, but i wanted navigation and other stuff, and didnt wanna pay $2000 for just the nav. unit.

So i proceeded to pull apart the center console

I used "Removing the Center Console" and "Pioneer AVIC-D3 Navigation Install" articles on www.audiworld.com to guide me along the process of pulling everything apart

Here everything is out

And a shot of the single-din frame

I decided to remove the ashtray and stick the climate-control unit in there, here's the test fit

Clearly theres some trimming needed.

From there, i went to cutting out the single-din frame to make room for the double din. All i did was cut the center bar along the edges.
And here's a test fit of the D3

Then i decided to simply cut some brackets out from some aluminum i had left over. here's the process pics...
the top hole clearly didnt work out too good, but i got it to fit properly on the second try.

Here's a pic of the unit bolted into place with my homemade brackets

Now, time to move on to the climate control unit. The brakets on the side of it had to be removed for it to fit into the ashtray hole. here's a crappy pic of the brackets cut off

From there i moved onto the center console, cutting the ashtray hole bigger
I drilled a bunch of holes all along the line i wanted to cut, and then simply snipped the remaining pieces.

By that time it was getting dark outside, and i just had enough time to screw the frame back inside

So now all i gotta do is make the time piece to go around the double din deck. Im planning on using the old one and filling in the spare holes with ABS plastic and making it look nice with bondo and a nice coat of paint... if you guys have any questions or feedback feel free to post... once again sorry about my crappy cell phone pics.

That looks awesome.

Can't wait to see it all nice and finished.
I'm thinking of putting my climate control where the ashtray is too. Then using the space for some gauges.

ya i was thinkin of putting a little tray and the cigarette lighter in the leftover space under the deck because if i dont, its just gonna look way too plain

good work, making that trim peice is gonna be hard though.
I think i saw on here once someone make a trim peice out of aluminum that looked pretty good.
