View Full Version : 2009 A4 article
I just saw this at Audiworld and am wondering if anybody knows the specs on the engines. They mention pretty much the same engines as today so should we expect the same hp numbers? I would think they woud want to increase output for the next A4s? [confused]

Even reduced by 3 inches I still think the front overhang is too big. I look at my IS300 when it sits next to the A4 and is so much nicer to have a short front overhang
Overall the proportions look ok to me. Since that is just a rendering we have to wait for the real deal another 4 months.

Couldn't agree more. You wanna make a car more aggressive looking, shorten the over hangs. Example, BMW, Lexus IS, Hell look at the Scion! lol

None of those cars have a TORSEN Quattro.

So how does that help on the appearance? Our cars have a retarded amount of overhang...

Because the overhang is a direct result of how far back the engine can be placed in the chassis. With the new MLP, Audi was able to move the engine about 3" further to the rear relative to the front axle. That's why the overhang is reduced on the A5 and B8 A4.
Moving the engine back 3" is HUGE in AWD automotive design.
If you want a TORSEN AWD system, you're extremely limited in how far back you can move the engine. Audi's being able to move it back as far as they have and mate it with TORSEN Quattro is an engineering marvel.
There is a reason Audi's have had large overhangs in the past....and it ain't because Audi loved the big overhang look.

audi is finally approaching the level of bmw as a company, and is going to be gaining a lot of cache in the years to come.
nice job audi.

That rendering doesn't look like they accounted for the reduced front overhang, or maybe that will be it. In fact, it looks very much like the current A4, but comparing it to the A5 it looks appropriate. I would like to see a shorter overhang but maybe that's all we get.
In past info releases Audi has said that they will move the engine back, but the front tires will move forward 3-4".
This article states, "nearly 3 inches". But, the car is 1" longer and so the tires moving forward less then 3" means the overhang is more the same than different.
Quattro and all is what we love, however, in terms of exterior body design, you can look at your current B7 and see that the front overhang didn't need to be that much. There is a LOT of wasted space in the front and the whole front end could have been designed with tighter clearance as BMW does in order to keep the overhang shorter.
Yes, Audi has the quattro, but BMW has a long inline6 cylinder sitting in there that they have to deal with.
Take a look in the engine bay at how BMW deals with dead space and how Audi has dealt with it in the current model. There is plenty of room for Audi to improve the useage of space.
The thing that's really cool is that the front axle will be forward of the engine mass. That's awesome.
