right in the middle of putting my southbend stage III in, this is the most frustrated Ive ever been in my entire fucking life!!! I'm really not exaggerating at all...my knuckles are sliced and bruised, everything was going smoothly untill 1 bolt!! I have been on one tranny bolt for about 3 hours now...I got so frustrated a couple times that my 1" wrench made it clear across the street about 4 times today (no one live across the street thankfully). I'm using a write-up from audiworld...and it is very thorough, but for some reason Audi put a few of the bolts right above the subframe...almost completely inaccessable[wrench]. but I'll keep plugging away and keep everyone posted.

here is the link BTW: click me (http://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/1929730.phtml)

clutch is cake...i can do it in about 5 hours. What you need to do to get to those bolts above the sub frame is when you get the tranny mounts off, just jack up the rear of the tranny. SUCKAAA NOW YOU ARE PISSED YOU DIDN"T THINK ABOUT THAT! Anyways...yeah....aim me at bi6bowlofrice if you need quick help. and get some gloves damnit

You can also loosen the front sub frame bolts and remove the rear sub frame bolts, this will allow you to tilt the sub frame so you can get those bottom bolts out. When you put the trans in do yourself a favor and dont put them back in.

Most likely you dont have the spline lined up correctly, you can turn the driveshaft output flange as you push the trans closer to the block.

Well at least you pulled the 2 brackets off, the first 2 times I did mine I did not take them off which makes it a real bitch to put the trans back in.

Euro-Tuner

the exhaust is half way on...dont want to get it in the way of the install.

mike: I tried turning the spline, but it doesnt seem to be locked in yet, I guess its just not quite there....I'll work at it tomorrow after work..

BTW: KO4 should be here next week (fingers crossed)

one thing my father noticed that worried him was that the meat on the new clutch is as thin as the old clutch on one side...anyone else notice that with theirs, cant really take pics now, but one side is no thicker than the old clutch was, Im assuming the different material makes this ok, but it seems odd...

your using a floor jack instead of a transjack?

thats probably one of reasons its giving you a hard time.

Euro-Tuner
04-22-2007, 08:09 PM
I dont have a tranny jack, but it is balanced well, and I dont see where a tranny jack would help at all? please inform me if Im mistaken though....sweet old skool jack though huh?

SeanF
04-22-2007, 09:19 PM
transjacks usually can adjust the angle of the transmission, as its being moved into position.

just so you know, had i had to replace my clutch, i would have done so with a floor jack.

mike-2ptzero
04-22-2007, 09:34 PM
I have done it 3 times with just a floor jack and by myself. Only hard part is getting the trans back on the floor jack while it is under the car.

Euro-Tuner:
Which side of the disk are you talking about, is it the Metal or Organic side?

Poopie
04-22-2007, 10:04 PM
i did mine with a floor jack. it wasn't too bad. just get it close enough in there with the spline lined up..then fine the longest bolt and use that to pull the trans to the motor and then put in the other bolts.

Euro-Tuner:

not 100% sure, but as I remeber it I was looking at the metal side...I guess thats why it was the same thickness, I didnt notice what composite material it was made out of

now Im mad, I had it close enough to where I had all the bolts in the bottom, and it just wouldnt go on any further, but I should have thrown some bolts in the top and tightened them down, instead I pulled it back and tried again, now its cocked as all hell, way off...oh well, I'll give it another go after work today. thanks for the input fellas

UPDATE:

well, I finally finished, but I must say I am disappointed, I took the car out for a test drive with the new clutch, and dumped it at 6k RPMs and it didnt hold for shit, I tried it a couple times around the same RPM's and it is not living up to my expectations, I didnt even put my KO4 in yet...[confused] it is just as bad as my old clutch that slipped constantly

Bic-Ball
04-24-2007, 07:36 PM
you dumped it with a brand new clutch? you should read the break in instructions

Ouch. You can only do that with a ALL METAL disk, since the disk you have has organic on 1 side you need to break it in for a bit. If you wanted a clutch setup that you could hammer on the minute after you installed it you should have bought the stage 5 clutch.

Not smart... break in should be 500-1k miles... lets hope you didn't fuck it up...

You've most likely glazed the clutch and destroyed it. Call South Bend and see what they say.

I've got more than 35k miles on my OFE SS and it can spin all 4 without a problem.

Euro-Tuner

I was totaly joking, I'm not that stupid...truth be told I could even start the car last night, autozone gave me the wrong gasket so I couldnt bolt up my milltek (it came in while I was in the middle of the clutch job) I have to get the right gasket tonight and I will start 'er up. I plan on breaking it in for 1k miles...it'll be hard, but Im gonna try to not even put a lot of torque on it while its engaged

B5-B_Broke

good luck with that.. jsut imagine all that crank spinning friction waiting to be released.. haha.. [:D]

That was NOT funny [mad] . I was looking at my computer screen like "what the fuck is wrong with him!??"....that is until I turned to page two. you really worried me. almost as not funny as the bald guy you posted [:D]. Take me for a ride when you finish the break in, or when I need a ride to work [:)] [wrench] nice job

so I got it on the road today, drove it to the gym and back (20 mi.) and it feels good, the exhaust is awesome, but I didnt really get on it at all, I want to wait till at least 100 miles to even put any real torque to the tranny...got some of that new clutch chatter though, can wait for that to go away...
