i have a non-sport and was wondering what would happen if i just put sport springs on it. would it wear out the shocks in a few months? or would it last?

i would buy c/os BUT im leasing the car and only have like a year and a half with it, and i just picked up a m3 and its currently the money pit.

- I am just lookin for a minor drop as the current non-sport setup is like rally ready [eek]

(im talkin bout putting s-line springs on a non-sport)

it will take about 25k miles to blow your shocks with your springs in. It honestly also depends on the living environment you are in. A lot of pot holes bumps. Mainly you just have to be careful.

I shot a brand new set of stock-size Bilstein HD's on my Benz with Eibach Prokit's in about 3K miles. Didn't take long. Just go the whole nine on it, I promise you will be happier.

I have a 2005 B7 without the sport package... what springs should I purchase to lower my vehicle about 1.5"??? I noticed in this post that adding sport springs to a non-sport suspension will ruin the shocks.

Can someone please advise?

this means that you either get coilovers where you'll be happier w/ the ride, and you can adjust the height, or you blow money on some h&r sport springs (the drop you're looking for) and buy some bilstein or koni shocks to go with them. but once you purchase springs and shocks, you may as well spend a couple hundred more and get the better bargain of coils

so will dropping the car about .75 be damaging to the shocks ?

If your only keep ing the car for another 1.5 years, I'd just put in the Eibach pro kit and call it a day. The shocks may start getting bad near the end but those springs aren't that low so you should be alright for a year or so. It's just for looks right.

then no, dropping .75 won't damage them. that's what the sline sport susp drop is. i have a pic of mine, as i'm sure there are tons of slines on the forum, to see what .75 really looks like. its what it should have come from the factory as--its not that much of a drop at all

Non-sport shocks are valved differently than sport shocks. I wouldn't say definitely that dropping them won't damage them. Common advice on the various forums is to change you shocks when you change your springs (and bump stops). I have read and seen of people's whose stock non-sport shocks have blown fairly quickly when mated with aftermarket lowering springs. Just my $.02

Sorry for my ignorance, but I cannot just buy some sport springs to go with my existing shocks without damaging the shocks/suspension??

no. the post above my first i believe hinted to the fact that you can change the springs w/out doing the shocks, but your shocks will inevitably blow. How long is questionable. If you get the oem sport springs i'm sure that with the non aggressive coiling of the spring that your stock shocks will blow soon, but there is no telling. But if you get an aftermarket spring, such as H&R or neuspeed, my guess is it won't be that long. The aggressiveness of the spring rate will kill the shocks as hey are not built to support that kind of spring rate

This question always comes up but I doubt many have learned from experience. The main problem with putting lowering springs on stock shocks is not that the rate of spring overpowers them and causes damage, it's the lack of travel because the car is lower. When you lower the car, you force the piston down out of it's operable design range and it may even bottom out and cause the seals to prematurely fail. Also, the bumpstops, if originals are used, will be too long and could cause the car to 'ride' on them also causing damage to the shock. If you drop a car 0.75" and trim the bumpstops a bit (if even necessary) your shocks will easily last 20-40KM's. If you go lower, they will last less time. This is especially true on higher $ cars like ours. On a golf, or civic, maybe a different story as the shocks can be crap anyways. There is a huge misconception about all this spring rate thing. Bilstein HD's can definitely handle most of the progressive higher spring rates out there (which , mind you aren't that stiff) but will not work as they are designed for stock ride height. Bilstien sports are for lower springs. This is the main point > the ride height/operable range of the shock, not the stiffness of the spring so much.
Just to add, and this might not be totally related but my buddy has been riding on his stock SPORT shocks for over 100K km on Tein springs, they have not blown, are still fine and he drives like a total madman. So I don't know, do what you think is right but I think you're wasting your money buying shocks when you don't need em.
The only time I'd say shock is a good idea is if you throw some Neuspeed race springs in or similar...then you WILL see a much shorter life on your shocks...but not 3K miles either. That's an exageration IMO.
