yo where did you get your cable (or the cheapest place to do so)? is it USB? how much $$$ ?

basically i'm sure if i searched i could find it, but if someone can say "get it from here it's the cheapest" and throw up a link, that'd be tight ;)

I paid on April 6 (a Monday), Paypal cleared it from my bank account on April 13 (a Friday) and I got it today. If you don't need the payment to clear you can probably order today and have it Wednesday.

the thing is that i dont know how to work this program.

The majority of it is explained in the pdf I posted, but here you go anyways.

Plug the cable in, Windows should say "New detected hardware" something or other. Let it search online to find the drivers. It may do this a few times, everytime let it search online. Eventually it'll say recognized hardware.
Find out what COM port it is on. Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT). I don't have my cable with my so I'm not sure what exactly it'll say, but there should only be one COM entries (unless you're using a serial modem or something weird).

If it isn't COM1-4, you need to change it. Right click on it and go to Port Settings > Advanced. Set it to any port between 1 and 4.

Plug the cable into your OBD-II port. Its located under the steering wheel to your left (on my 98.5 1.8t anyways). Put the car into accessory mode, you don't need to start the engine. The blue LED should come on on the connector.
Open up VAG-COM and click on Options. Select the COM port that your cable is on and hit the Test button. It should then say interface found and allow you to save your configuration. Do so.
Go back to the main VAG-COM screen and hit Auto-Scan. Select the Chassis Type (for our cars it is 8D) and click Start. It will take a few minutes during which your ABS lights will blink and such.
Pull out your wallet to start fixing all the damn codes that will probably come up.

FYI most eBay cables won't work with versions newer than that 409 release (has something to do with some proprietary functions in the drivers for the actual ross-tech cables).

It's not really a big deal (not worth the extra $150 or so to buy a cable from them IMHO), but something to be aware of.

ok, just got back from scanning the car, car has the CEL on and after it was done scanning it didnt pull up any codes. it scanns through all addresses and then it says END. without anything else.

Just upgraded from my old serial cable to an ebay usb one and it wouldn't connect the first few times so I just kept trying and then yesterday it just worked with 409.1. I love VAG COM though. It is amazing!

Make sure you have the key on to get response.

So I have the same Ebay cable... has anyone been able to get this to work once the car is actually turned on? My Vag-Com software freezes when I turn the car on, which is a bummer because I want to log some things.

Also, anywhere to get a full version of the software? PM me :)

Hmmm... Definitely should have invested the extra money for a Vag-Com cable from Ross-Tech. Not only can you not use version [hail] 607 (actually, they just released an even newer version) with the eBay cable (which has a ton more features and updates than version 409.1), but you also have to lay down an extra $100 to Ross-Tech to get the full version of 409.1. I have a Ross-Tech cable and it was definitely worth the extra $70 or so to use the newest version AND have every available feature unlocked.

Anyway, for your problem about USB, I believe you have to go into your drivers and set a port number for each USB controller. Then, when you do the test for controller, you have to select the port number you set up the USB port to be. [up]
