Obviously the 18x9x2 is larger, but the 18x6x2.5 will fit without having to cut my bumper bar. What are the dimensions of intercoolers designed for the B5 A4? Maybe I can get away with the 18x9x2 without cutting into my S4 bumper.

Does anyone grind the mounts off the top of the intercooler and mount the intercooler on the bottom tabs? Seems like it would give you a little more room.

Your talking 1/2 inch. 9 is pushnig it. Stick with 6-7 if your retaining stock rebar

The mounting bosses on the intercooler don't really interfere with fitment. I used a 7" core and ground the tabs off the reinforcement bar - you can see in my pics that without digging into the Rebar, my intercooler sits very low. The mounting bosses actually sit behind the rebar so they don't contribute to the vertical placement at all.

With the 9" you will have to cut some of the support, maybe even some with the 6" too. If the core is 18" long, add another 6 inch for the total length of the fmic from tank to tank at the inlet/outlet spots. The S4 bumper will allow for a 24"x10.5" core without any major cutting of the skin, but will have to remove a big chuck of the support.

Thanks for all the replies.
europshhrc279I'm interested in the 27x6x2.5 but only found that size on ebay. I want to stray from ebay and feel the chance of obtaining a quality ic is less than 25%. Anyone have a link I can find this size from a reputable shop?
mike-2ptzero24x10.5x? seems great too. I'll be running an S4 bumper as soon as it is painted and don't mind cutting into the rebar. I butchered my stock A4 bumper, and gotta say the worst part was cutting the bumper cover. Cutting the rebar is straight forward, so I'm willing to do it again. Cutting into the plastic is a constant trim and test fit process. Let me know where you purchased your ic at.

My custom FMIC was built by Fred at Evolution Racewerks using a Garrett core. Just make sure you pick a fmic setup that will match well with the turbo/hp you are making.

Here is a picture without the bumper.

IIRC Bar= square and Tube = round

But here are some #'s from Garrett

Bar/Plate
703518-6015 18.0 x 6.3 x 3.0 7.3lbs = 310 hp
703518-6016 18.0 x 7.9 x 3.0 8.9lbs = 385 hp

My old setup
487085-6002 20.1 x 11.2 x 3.0 15.2lbs = 600 hp

My new setup
703520-6011 24.0 x 10.3 x 3.5 17.8lbs = 800 hp

(added) Pics

Left = Plate, Right = Tube

Mike, that is one thick intercooler. Currently, I'm running a k04, so any of the core sizes mentioned would likely be adequate. However, I intend to go bigger in the far future, so it would be wise to purchase something that can accomadate larger turbos. Thanks for the link, it'll give me something to read tonight.
