View Full Version : B7 Avant Flat Out on the Autobahn
a few days ago, a friend of mind went back home to germany and took his parent's stock '05 2.0T Avant for a spin down the Autobahn. he said it was a fifth gear pull, and the road is sliiightly downhill with the wind at his back.
for the metricly challenged:
260 km/h = 161 mph

Pretty common over there though. When I was over there in May last year, I had an A3 tdi but damn thing would pin at 200km/h and I was getting passed like I was standing still by A6 and E class wagons all the time! If you ever get a chance guys, go over there and spend a few days driving the highways there with a fast car...it is truly awesome. No words to accurately describe how much fun it is.

AWESOME......
Something is wrong ....
He's either not stock or just removed the speed limiter.
A4s 2.0Ts are supposed to be limited to 130 mph.
Cant' tell you for sure - I got close but not past 130 and now I am chipped so I shouldnt have a speed limiter anymore.

I thought they were 130 in the US and 155 in Europe.
If they're 155 in Europe + a downhill and a slight tailwind, that would equal 161mph in my book.

155 is the absolute max speed at which cars by Audi/BMW/Merc/Porsche are supposed to be limited - kinda of like a gentlemen's agreement.
130 is the max speed (also governed) for A4 in US
155 is the max speed for S4 in US
I went online on audi.de and this is what I got for a 2.0T A4 quattro
Höchstgeschwindigkeit = speed limit from what I know.
238 km/h
From 238 to 260 that's quite a difference - it must have been a heel of a downhill ;-)
BTW: German cars are not limited when they are sold in UK - according to Top Gear but I think for the 2.0T the speed limit is due to the limitations of the engine

I spent some time in Europe over the summer, and one night we went to dinner with my cousin and his wife, and I was sitting in the back with my wife... all of a sudden I realized that we were going really fast, I glanced at the speedo and saw 260km/h and he was doing it straight for 20 mins !!! The best part of the story..... WE GOT PASSED BY A 993TT !!! Best memory of my life !!!

I wonder if the tires on that avant are rated for those speeds.

I pulled my 2.0 to 150mph @6700 rpm on the speedo. 3am last Christmas morning I-5 S Bakersfield(no one in sight). Had a 1/2 tank of 76 100oct pump. I wonder how off the speedo calibration is at that point.
what tape were u listening to?

Driving flat-out and pegging the tach and speedo: awesome!
Averting attention long enough to take a picture of the moment: nuts!

The thing with limiters is they dont always exist.
My DTM isnt limited, neither have a few other cars I've had that should have been.
Several AMG's that Ive driven go well past the 255, and Porsche only limits the Cayenne, for its own safety.

Sorry to bust your friend's bubble, but 260kph is only what the speedometer displays - highly overrated from the factory.
I was in an A3 2.0Tdi 2 months ago and I hit 260kph in that thing but my GPS speedo only read ~24x kph.
That being said, you can always increase your rolling diameter to get the speedo closer to accurate [up] Germany's fackin awesome too.

limited to 155 .. And as the speed limiter is hit a mph warning comes up on the D.I.S and a chime rings... Well it does in a RS4.. Dont forget factory speed limiters can easily be gotten around..
140 mph im my 06 avant. That has the DTM engine and there seemed to be lots left in the engine and thats in the U.K .
For all you american guys that havent visited europe german autobahns are amazing.. You can get 4-5 mile straights with not a hill insight and no speed limits. Nearly all the german people drive well with nobody hogging the fast lane at 70mph.

Exactly. The 160mph is more likely to be around 145-150mph.

The official speed limit on our autobahn here in germany is 250 km/h. I am not sure why the avant runs 260.
If you run 140 km/h on the left lane you get angry faces from behind.
Many owners of newer cars run their cars in the 180 - 200 range.
Yes we have war on the autobahn sometimes. It gets more and more crazy.

Lol, During my 8 days stay there I did about 1100 miles, mostly autobahn and only once was there someone that was "slow" in the leftmost lane. Of course a beautiful S8 was riding his ass with the left turn signal on the whole time![:D] I was just behind him enjoying the view and thinking why drivers elsewhere can't do this?

This is soooo true. Man, do you ever have to pay attention when you're driving over there...2 seconds and somone is on your ass with their left signal light on and an angy face. It's such a trip but such a pleasant change from the sleepy idiots in North America who feel it's their god given right to never move out of the fast lane as people pass them on the right.

I drove my Golf 4motion 250+ (155 mph) every single day as well as every single rental car I had after my Golf sold.
Downhill you can hit 160 mph no probo

PS, don't let your drunk German friends take the keys to your rental (especially new ones with 74 km's on odometer)
BEFORE

More importantly don't use your CC for the rental car
