I have never driven an avant and was wondering what you guys think about the difference in the handling and acceleration in an avant Vs. a sedan assuming they are both 1.8t's.
Thanks,

Avant would be the heavier of the two but the extra weight makes it more balanced front/back than the sedan.

Looks? Avant hands down! [:D]

I had a B5 Sedan and a B6 Avant
I loved both but I would have to say that avant is way better (space wise)

what do you think the difference in weight is I cant find it by using google. Do the aants have different stock gears or anything like that. what are the major differnces if any, drivetrain wise.

no difference in gearing, or any part of the drivetrain. rear body and rear interior are the only differences. I can't confirm spring rate differences, but some aftermarket shock/spring combos have different part numbers between the two. I believe the spare tire area is smaller on the Avant and therefore we only get a full-size donut spare. Not sure what you sedan guys get.

Avant, hands down [;)]

you have a "full size spare" meaning its the exact same wheel as the other 4, or just a big 16" donut?

i think the avant is 110lbs heavier than the sedan...i saw it in a recent post ill try and dig it up.

edit: it was in tech talk

onemoremile posted this:

Audi's numbers:
3241 lbs 1.8TQM sedan
3351 lbs 1.8TQM Avant
3384 lbs 2.8TQM sedan
3494 lbs 2.8TQM Avant

Is the Avant cheaper to insure?

^^^ this I can't comment on, but Avants generally tend to cost more because they are harder to find and for some odd reason, less desirable? [rolleyes]

So if you had two of the same setup sedan and avant both K04'd with coils, fmic, exhaust, giac k04 tune, intake you know the routine, would there be any difference between the two performance wise assuming they had the same mods.

It is an exact same as the other 4.

Audi A6 4.2 fat five 17x8 w/ 235/45/17 tire on it.

Now the lid doesn't sit flush when screwed down but the wheel and tire fit in the compartment.

I guess it would come down to where you are doing your comparison. if they were identical cars, year, driver, mods, etc - the sedan would clearly beat the avant in a straight line, but the avant would have the advantage on a road course; better weight distribution and a longer rear deck to help in the aero department.

ah. yeah, kinda figured the deck wouldn't sit flush. from the factory, the avant comes with a large donut whereas the sedan comes with an addition factory wheel. I wanted to drop one of my track wheels in the rear, but I can't even get it in there. it too is a 17X8 [confused]

Is it just about the weight that would have the sedan beating the avant in a straight line.

yes, its the exact same car except for the rear end.

Being that the avant weighs like 100-150 lbs more than the sedan I think they would still be very close.

I can keep pace with an R32 on a road course even though my car weighs 3600 lbs with me onboard and it's Neuspeed K04 hits a peak of 17 psi. The car handles pretty well when it is dialed in a bit.

avants ftw. yes, they are "technically" slower because of the weight, but it is absolutely minimal.

0-60
1.8t sedan: 7.1 sec (8.8 sec. auto)
1.8t avant: 7.3 sec (8.9 sec. auto)
2.8 sedan: 8.1 sec (9.8 sec. auto)
2.8 avant: 8.5 sec (10.2 sec. auto)

plus, it is really all just about how you mod them that determines their end results.

but avants look better(imo), and can haul so much stuff.

avant is so useful because of the extra space. it is my only vehicle and i would have had so many more headaches if i had a sedan. moving and picking up fish tanks to furniture is no problem. the yakima rack goes on and off the roof rails in under 5min.
my friend had a 2000 2.8 manual sedan and it had a bit of understeer in hard corners even with H-sport sway bars. the avant 2.8 with a 20mm rear bar handles perfectly neutral in hard corning. the 1.8 has an even closer f/r weight distribution without the heavier v6 up front.

best thing is in the suburbs a silver audi wagon is nearly invisible to police. i can not count the number of times i have been flying over the speed limit past camping squad cars and been totally ignored. in my slammed supersonic blue integra i could not go 2 weeks without getting pulled over, speeding or not!

i just plain like the way the avant looks compaired to the sedan.

lol, some guy on fourtitude/here bought a brilliant yellow avant and on drive home he got pulled over. the cop said he wouldnt have even looked at the car if it hadnt been such a bright color.

The lid doesn't sit flush but the rear deck is fine.

I don't know why you can't fit your 17x8 in there. It isn't a tight fit but it does take a bit of finess to angle it in so it plops into the space properly.

I use a second set of A6 4.2 wheels for track so it makes carrying a spare very nice.

can't disagree any more. b6 and b7 avants are heavenly but b5...i'd say take the sedan.

Sedan FTW!

Just throw a bag of rocks in the trunk if you want it to handle like an Avant.

I do love the wagons, my Saab wagon is great.
