View Full Version : Just installed S4 frontbumper! My experiences

Finally I had a week off and the weather seemed to be warm enough so I decided to put my S4 bumper on.

This thread is for all you guys who are planning something like that in the future.

I own a 99.5 "facelift" A4 and was told the S4 bumper also came off a "facelift" S4.

Step 1:

It was quite easy to take off the A4 bumper beside the fact that there is more dirt behind the bumper than you might think. Don't forget to release the connectors for the foglights before you take off the bumper. Everything can be done by one person only. I found it easier to work on the bumper after taking out the headlights.

Step 2:

Time to swap over the parts for the headlight washing unit. First I was a bit clueless as I had no instructions how this works but I took my time and finally it was quite easy. Luckily both bumpers use the same hub-cylinders. There are a few plastic brackets left from the A4 bumper which aren't used on the S4 bumper!!

Required parts:

4x metric M6 screws for the hub-cylinders (these replace the self-tapping screws on the A4 bumper). 25 milimetres or longer.
4x washers
S4 plastic covers plates (the A4 plates have a different design):

8D0 807 721 AA
8D0 807 722 AA

Also the A4 foglights have to be replaced through S4 foglights (not installed yet as they are a PITA to find):

8D0 941 699 C
8D0 941 700 C

Step 3:

The A4 bumper supports could be re-used on my car. But during the installation process I realized that the two plastic brackets at the fenders (where you snap in the bumper) looked a bit big. In fact I had to interrupt my work for a day to order two S4 brackets.

Required parts (plastic brackets):

1x 8D0 807 283 A
1x 8D0 807 284 A

Finally I installed the new bumper. It helps a lot to work with two persons during this step. The fitment was really good, right from the beginning on.

I am going to make minor adjustments in the near future though. I am very glad that there are no big gaps or other surprises. The bumper even sits a few milimeters too high in my eyes. Nevertheless I am very satisfied with my work.

Here are a few crappy before/after pictures:

Not sure why you would need to replace the side snap in brackets since the ones on the A4 work just fine. Just seems like you ordered a bunch of parts that you really did not need to put the S4 bumper onto your 2000. The end results does look good.

Nah, they were definitely different. Please have in mind this is an european car. There are a lot of differences possible. Anyway both parts cost me 8 Euro ( = $12).
I wish I took some pictures during the installation process. Maybe I can take a picture of the A4 brackets later. Just out of curiousity!

Thank you for the comments.

The US price for those brackets is only 8.43. They are cheap parts.

The bumper looks great. Matches that S4 grill nicely. [up]

Well I guess that info might have helped to put in your write up since the euro A4 bumper(stub) is different then the ones found on the North America model, which can be seen by just looking at the washer covers.

That's simple: Nobody has them in germany. I wanted the amber [rolleyes] ... Believe it or not.

Of course I didn't want to downgrade the beamt pattern. Because of this I wrecked another ecode set and replaced the DOT projectors with euro projectors. Furthermore it is a well known fact that we have citylights which the US.specs. do not have. So what to do? I carefully drilled two holes for the citylight sockets into the highbeam reflectors. Sounds simple but it was lots of work.

Thanks for all the kind comments so far. Concerning the fitment: The two S4 plastic brackets were not adjustable (in contrary to the A4 brackets). The only points were I had a chance to adjust a bit: Headlights and bumper supports. So it wasn't really difficult.

it may be my *****y eyes, but I see no difference in an A4 grill, S4 grill and Rs4 grill! they all look the same :|

i already took the oem mesh off of the sides and center, the only thing is that i need to remove the center bar in the center bottom grill, here is my thread on the s4-rs4 grill conversion

but since your mesh is painted, didnt the pain want to chip off around the edges when u pulled it out?

if whoever painted the bumper did a good job and did it correctly, everything would be fine if you just dont pull on the grill, make sure you do it gently. if you take the horizontal bars from all three grills, you`ll have to bondo and repaint, so either way you`ll have to apply paint again. if you look in my thread you`ll see. If you see my bumper now, it looks like shit since the guy who painted it, did a shitty ass job. Didnt go back because i still owe him $100 for the job. so i just left it like that until i paint the whole car. here is a pic of it right now. (i still have to remove the horizontal bar from the center grill.)
