This has been discussed many times but I am doing the swap now and still unclear of what it needed. is it just a straight swap? will a 2.8 tranny from a passay work being im fwd?

2.8 tranny, take the mounts off your 1.8 tranny and put them onto the 2.8

Bolt it up

a4 rob how do you like your 2.8 tranny? With my 35r on my 1.8L (stock displacement) the close gears really help when racing because I land back in my powerband after each shift. I fear the long gears in the 2.8 would cause me to land outside of my powerband after each shift.

What do you think?

Well i can definitly feel taller gears in there. Even with the T28 I think it really helps

The 2.8 trans has about 6% longer gears than the 1.8 trans. The difference is there but it really isn't that much. Because all of the gears are higher you really aren't in any danger of falling out of your powerband. The gear spacing has changed enough to worry about. The longer gears cause you to lose a bit of mechanical advantage but that 35R more than makes up for it. [;)]

1.8 trans: 2nd at 7200 is 4700 in 3rd. shift is at 63 mph.
2.8 trans: 2nd at 7200 is 4800 in 3rd. shift is at 71 mph.

You will be glad you went 2.8. You will really love 1st gear much better since it is a bit taller and even more so the higher the rpms you go. On my car I get to nearly 75mph in 2nd gear before 8k and 115 mph in 3rd gear by 8k.[:D]

If I went back to the 1.8 trans I might have to launch in 2nd since 1st is just way too short.[:(]

8k on a 2.8 trans should be 78 mph in 2nd gear and 118 in 3rd.
8k on a 1.8 trans should be 70 mph in 2nd gear and 106 in 3rd.

The difference really shows itself in the higher revs. 118 on a 1.8 trans is 4th at 6350 revs.

how do you get an 8k rev limit? I hear the aeb head is good for 8.5K, but does any of the bottom end need strengthening? What turbos would be acceptable for that range?

Above 8k the stock valve springs will float. To go above 8k you will need upgraded valve springs.
