I read the FAQ up top and did some research but I'm still a bit unclear about this. I want to get a set of 1-piece HID headlights for my car, and it's a 1998. As far as I've been able to tell the DEPO and Valeo ECodes only come in 2 piece sets for 1998s OR I can buy the 1 piece set for 1999.5+ from DEPO or Valeo and do some minor trimming to make them fit?

I understand that the trimming is minor, but does anyone have a picture of what the trimming looks like and a DIY or template of where to cut?

If I bought these:
http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi/?html=learnmore.html&productID=458
and a city light wiring kit, a 1 piece wiring adapter, and a HID kit (bulbs, ballasts, ignitors), that's everything I'd need?

With these housings I'd have normal lights, brights and city lights?

Awesome, after searching for a while I came across the "Remove the side marker orange plastic" article on AutiWorld hundreds of times but never saw that one. So what I get from that is I can get the 1999.5+ 1-piecers and put them into my car by trimming the metal on the fender that curves behind the housing. Anyone have a suggestion on what to cut it with? I don't want to use a dremel because I'd probably go through 35 bits and 14 hours of cutting and a few pieces of metal stuck in my cheeks. Would it be a good idea to use a cutting blade on the end of a normal drill?

Thanks for the link.

The 1 piecs projector lights (HID ready) can be put into the pre-face lift a4's by trimming the tabs off the fender for the markerlights Or you can get the 2 piece prjectors, you have everything you need unless you want to add a diode between the low beam positive and negitive to stop the "headlight out" warnig, I belive you'll need a 2.2ohms resitor for each side. You'll have High beams and Low beams. I'm not sure what city light are but I am guessing that they are daytime running lights, if they are you,ll have to wire them to your highbeams, because the lower voltage will not kick the ignitors on
Here is the diffrence between the HID 50w and a regular halogen

I'm actually wondering what the best method is to trim the fender as well. As soon as my car leaves the shop (after my TB giving out 40k miles prematurely, argh!) I'll be putting in my new ecodes.

Would a skil/jig saw with a metal-cutting blade work? I know a high-RPM grinder would probably be ideal, but I would rather not have to buy another tool to do this unless I have to.

A small die grinder would be great, I would tape it up before you cut, and use sealer on your fresh metal

I was lazy and put 2piece in my car, looks just as good.

I might bring my car back to my high school shop teacher and see if I can use his grinder. The city lights are tiny lamps inside of the high beam housing that simply light the housing up. I'm not sure if they are running lights, but I know they're used in europe to make your car visible without lighting the street up. According to AWE they come on with your parking lights.

I did some searching and these seem to be the only places that sell them

lltek - $555 (http://www.lltek.com/lighting_a4_b5_ecode_99501.htm)
ecs - $580 (http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi/?html=learnmore.html&productID=458)
avalon motorsports - $600 (http://www.avalonmotorsports.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_24_185_61/products_id/135)
achtuning - $650 (http://shop.achtuning.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=287avalon)

I think I'll go the ECS route, I just bought a bunch of stuff from them and was happy and I have a few more things I want to buy from them. I can buy the wiring and stuff from them also, I just need to pick where to get the HID kit from. I'm open to suggestions. These look the best (6000k is pure white, right?):

I thought you had your light already, but all those ecodes are good

The OEM color temp for Audi 4300K,
6000K has a little more blue and they go all the way to 14000K (very blue). HID are advailable in 35w and 50w, and you'll need the HID bulbs that fit the H7
Here's where I got my 50w HID's for 216$ shipped
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/50W-12V-XENON-HID-KIT-H1-H4-H7-9007-6000K-10000K-12000K_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ36476QQitemZ1800 97507672QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
As for the city lights I didnt notice the bulbs for them in any of those ecodes, Mine have them, I just didnt know what they were called, Here's a pic notice right under the highbeam, a small bulb (I put a blue ones in)

Got a giant package from ECS today :) The wiring harness has me totally confused though; the wires were separate from the plugs, plus they weren't labeled so I have no idea what goes where. I look at a few articles including this one:
http://www.audiforums.com/m_149303/tm.htm

But it doesn't really tell me what I need to do with the wires on the other end. (And wtf I can get my headlights off with keeping the bumper on?)

That AudiWorld article posted up top has a Word document in it that lists wiring instructions:
Passenger Side:
Tan/White (Low Beam) –Blue Wire (2)
Yellow/White (High Beam)-Yellow Wire (1)
Brown (Ground) –Black (4)
Green Wire is for city light bulb in the head lamp T-Tap to parking lamp wire or cut and butt connect .

Drivers Side:
White/Black (low Beam) – Blue Wire (2)
Yellow/Black (High Beam)-Yellow Wire (1)
Brown (Ground)-Black (4)

But once again, those instructions are assuming that the plug is already configured. Does anyone have a list of what wires go into which sockets on the plug? There are little numbers on there.

On a side note I'm not very happy with VVME.
