"doc did it, surely it's ok."

hah, WRONG. i sanded and cleaned the headlights well then used the night shades spray tint. it didn't take well at all to the plastic and i probably went too dark (well, i know i did). they're way too dark and look shitty, so i'm looking to replace them w/ ebay depo black housings.

the tails, however, look nice. i'll be looking to polish them soon to get them glossed up a bit.

QUESTION: are the ebay depo black housing style headlights HID ready? i just want to buy new headlights and swap out my HID bulbs from my factory 1 piece 2001.5 headlights, doable?

If you really need that look, just get some tinted Lamin-X

i did it because one of the headlights is kinda busted anyway from an accident. i figured oh well, if it looks shitty or is THAT much dimmer, then i'll get the headlights i really want, which are these:

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/itg-gifts_1943_7520579

so yah, my question still stands. are there any HID ready aftermarket black housing 1 piece headlights for an '01 A4 that i can buy and just put my stock HID bulbs in them w/o having to buy a HID upgrade kit?

dont buy those... those will have worse light output than those sprayed ones you have... anything with angel eyes or cheap projectors like those suck, trust me... I had 2 different sets from ebay... just go with ecodes if you want good hid light output, you can put hids in those crapy ones off ebay, but it will look horrible and not perform as well as they could. Waste of money...

The ones you posted above are H1 youd need adapters and they come with a warning saying not for HID use, they do not have a clean cutoff shield...

Paint remover with a greenpad spounge, or whatever those are called, the green harder spounges you can by at the local grocery store... also you can resurface them with a really high grit sandpaper (wet sand them)... then respray with a new clear coat paint to make them look new.... do a couple coats of the clear.

Paint remover, just make sure you get one that doesn't harm plastic. I used some on a set of headlights I got to take off a paint strip. Didn't hurt them at all.

I got deez DEPOs from eBay. $160 shipped. Have the ballasts mounted right on the back of the housings, they're ARE HID-ready (H7, not D2R/S). They also have the European cutoff; no gay American crap.

I tinted my tails a few weeks ago, and I think they turned out okay. I only used two coats of the Night Shades spray, but I covered the reverse tail light so I wouldn't lose any necessary light. Personally, I think thats the only way to do it -- two light coats of paint, and cover the reverse light.....Gives it a more stock look....As far as the headlight go, if you've got one piece headlights, do the clear corner mod and leave em alone. The crystal clear look is priceless

yah i'm just looking for something like these, but in 1 piece though. i like the style of the ones ppl say not to get, i think they look really great, but ultimately i just want black housings w/ HID's and a cutoff. i'm trying to avoid having to buy a HID kit because that's just more $$$. don't these headlights come HID ready so all i have to do is plug in a bulb and i'm done? if not, can i at least take the hid ballast or whatever off my stock ones and put them in to the new ones? i'm still not COMPLETELY savvy on headlights yet...

are you saying this will make them look new considering i washed and wet sanded the headlight before putting tint on it? i think i used some 400 or 800 grit, i forget.

Working at a bodyshop gives you a good advantage on this. ive been tinting taillights for about 2 years and the way my shop does it is we mix black paint into a clear coat, wetsand the lights with 1000-1500 grit to remove manufacturer marks then we clear them . depending on how the customer wants them is how many coats we do.

Headlights are a bit iffy though. I refuse to do them really dark because of laws and safetey issues.
If your intrested in me doing a set for you ill give you AZ discounts.

yah, the first time you put up that all black picture i about shit myself, looks awesome.

the tails turned out pretty good mind you, just needs to be polished a bit to get rid of the matte look.

i'll be getting some paint remover and trying to get the headlights cleaned off.

QUESTION: what's the best way to remove paint from the front/rear lower valances i painted? i'm just going to remove that paint too while i'm at it since it's shipping on the corners and on the back.

the only thing i like smoking is the kush. =)

anyway you can try and turn your RUINED headlights into air dams for your intake and waht not. if not ill take it off your hands.

just use paint thinner to take that stuff off. Can't get any worse. Then buff them out if you sanded it. There is a headlight plastic restoring kit you can buy that is used to bring back dull headlights from wear....to like new. I've seen it done on our stock lights. That will save you on having to replace the mistake you did.

btw, here's a good writeup for using the spray tint on 350z tails. this is kinda proof that you CAN make the spray shit look really good if you just do it right.

elaborate more please, what are air dams? turn them into air dams? like... for the track or something? i'm assuming whatever i turn them in to would be installed into the headlight housing, thus, no usable headlight. but yah, when i get new headlights i'll come looking for you.

cool man that's helpful info. i actually did that first thing when i got home from work today. i'd say i put a good 2 solid hours of scrubbing in to it, that shit does NOT come off easy. it's still not done completely. i was gettin huffed out on fumes and hungry and tired. at least i can SEE now and won't get a ticket.

i'm hoping to come in to a chunk of money in the next month or two, so if i do, i'm just doing a bunch of shit at once and i'll get "the look" i'm going for in one swing.

yah man, that's totally what i was going for. again, for some reason the spray wasn't taking as well to the headlights as it seemed to on the tails, so i had to put on another layer. maybe i'll just look in to that film stuff, i know there's a thread out there on it around here somewhere.

taking the headlights in/out is a pain in the ass because of the screw on the sides and that little metal tab the screws go through that f'ing moves every time you get it in to position, i may just clean these things off and say forget it.

in response to your original question those lights done come hid ready but i bought them and took a dremel and made where the bulb goes through bigger and they work good i have better light output than stock by far i had broken the tabs off of my headlights in the last 3 wrecks and was tired of gluing them back together and i also like the adapter bracket so ya dont have to fight the one screw so yes hids will fit if ya are carefull the turn signals dont fit tho at least mine didnt i had to make a bracket to hold it the stock set up in
