Got my first ticket today in Bland County, Virginia while I was taking my friend home from being in my town for the weekend. Cop was a real jerk, 86 in the 65 while keeping up with the rest of the traffic. Got reckless driving by speed, by 2mph! I've never had a ticket before or any other problems. They marked the box saying that I did not have to attend court (thank God because it's an hour away and I am a TN resident). I'm supposed to sign and mail in the ticket and then receive my fine in the mail, then mail it in. The cop said the judge will determine the fine and mail it to me. I have until May 23. I'm pretty worried about this. Anyone have any idea how much the fine will be? Attending court is out of the question. I'd really like to handle this all by mail.

just ask for defensive driving. it will clear it from your record and you won't have to pay the full fine.

omg if you were just keeping up with traffic your fine.... just say you were following the flow of traffic.... be like im not going to speed up to hit someone and im not going to slow down for someone to hit me in the ass... and if worst comes to worst get your friend to testify with you. Be like my friend was in front of me when the officer pulled me over... his plate number is etc etc... he was also following the flow of traffic of the person in front of him... if your story is the same you said it is... the cop was just being a jerk off... unless you were swerving in and out of lanes and whatnot... keeping up with traffic is perfectly legal..

I really want to avoid going to court. I don't have to attend, and I can handle it by mail. Yeah the cop really was a jerk. He said he clocked me at 86 by laser. How much do you think the fine will be?

u realize if u dont go to court your insurance WILL rape you. SPeeding ticket AND a RECKLESS DRIVING!!!! good luck. Typically your insurance will go up about 10% for the first ticket for 3 years but the Reckless will destroy your insurance. So court isnt worth saving a few grand over the next few years?

and i know some cops and they say the excuse they get more often then anythign was "i was keeping up with the flow of traffic" it doesnt work and u cant tell a judge that and expect it to work. just try and get rid of the reckless

time for someone to get a Valentine 1, and i have no idea, the only way you can lower the fine is if you go to court, otherwise your stuck w/ w/e the judge decides.

No....you can file for defensive driving via mail or phone....so you don't have to attend court...and nowadays you can do it online ...thank heaven....and have it sent in ...I haven't been in court since the last time I fought the case...and won.

keeping up with traffic is perfectly legal..

often times it is even safer to keep up with traffic. the whole keep up with traffic speel is good in court, as long as you can prove it.

THEN again my license is currently suspended, so why listen to me?!?? LOL @ myself

Get a lawyer to fight the ticket, and either a Beltronics Bel RX 65 or a Valentine 1 radar detector.

Just off the top of my head, I would guess at least a few hundred.
At least, that's definitely what you're looking at if you get that ticket in CA and can't get out of it somehow.
I'd also send in some type of letter to the judge along with the ticket.
It couldn't hurt.

Explain your situation in writing, have someone proofread it.
Make changes, and then have someone else proofread it before it gets sent.

Sometimes people interpret things differently when they are written and you want to make sure you get your point across properly.

Good luck, either way.

The letter sounds like a good idea. I was just wanting a rough estimate on how much it may be.. because one of my friends said that it's around $1,000 and that just seems way too far out there..

I believe Virginia is the state that if they find a radar detector in your car ON or OFF, it's a huge fine. Think it's one of the states that it's very illegal.

They will drop the reckless driving and give you a 235$ ticket. 10$ for each mile over the speed limit and 25$ to the head and neck foundation. You may even get lucky and they'll sometimes drop the first 10mph

Radar detectors are banned in all vehicles in Virginia and the District of Columbia and in big trucks in New York and Illinois. However, they are allowed in noncommercial vehicles in the other 49 states besides Virginia

No it won't. Most insurance companies get reports from DMV for driving records. Since he is from TN, VA won't report it to TN DMV so it will never show up on his record, and therefore never be reported to insurance. So all you have to do is pay the fine. As for the radar detector, very illegal in VA. As for the other suggestions, I say still go with trying to get defensive driving via phone or internet. It will save you a bundle.

I know in Texas, if you get reckless driving along with your ticket, you don't even get the option to take DD. You are just screwed. The only way around it is to fight it in court.

a very similar situation happened to me in upstate NY last month a statey pulled me over for 87 in a 65 i am a resident of PA so nothing transfers for me. I mailed the ticket in and the fine was $200 that was it...... so I think your gonna be fine especially if your out of state but TN laws may be diffrent from PA.

Get a lawyer to fight the ticket, and either a Beltronics Bel RX 65 or a Valentine 1 radar detector.

Laser, also know as "LIDAR" is almost un-detectable. The beam that is sent to the car is only 18" thick meaning that if your radar detector picks it up, the cop most likely (go read radarbusters.com) has already got you. Read this...

"A growing trend today are police departments moving to laser (lidar) enforcement and it is estimated that there are over 50,000 police laser guns in use today in the USA.

These guns transmit a beam of infrared light at a frequency of 330 terahertz. This light beam is only 18 inches wide at 500 feet and gets smaller as you approach the officer.

This narrow light beam is aimed by the officer to a reflective area on your vehicle, such as your headlamps or front license plate. The officer can only use the laser gun while he is stationary.

Unless your radar detector is within this 18" circle, or it picks up "scatter" from the beam, your radar detector will never alert. And by chance it does, it is too late as the officer has already obtained your speed.

The use of lidar varies from state to state. As an example police in Hawaii use laser exclusively. Florida is split 50/50, with most local police departments using laser and highway patrol officers using radar. In Pennsylvania, police laser guns are not used at all. "

Imagin how I felt, I just purchased a $450 Passport 9500i GRRR!!!!![headbang]

WRONG!!!! I am a TN resident and my sister got a speeding ticket in Russell, KS back a coupel summers ago when she was 18. She was doing 99 in a 65 (in a Tahoe[eek] ). She thought that she could just pay the ticket and not tell my dad. She was hit with huge insurance fees. He insurance more than doubled. She was paying almost $5,000 a year for insurance and she drives a X5 3.0, not the quickest vehicle.

Because I am on the same insurance plan, or at least was, my insurance went up too. It was already bad with a 16 year old driving a BMW 330Ci

A couple days ago I was comin home at 2am on the highway when I spotted a civic si and a gli. The si was like taking candy from a baby and the gli kept up pretty well but I still had 4 legnths on him. We slowed down and the gli passes me and starts braking hard. I look to the right and there was a chicago police van and we were doing about 100 still. So I slow down to around 85 and I pull up to a crown vic to check it for cop plates. I speed up around 85-90 around him and a mile later I look in my rear view to see those beautiful red and blue grille lights. I instantly thought that the van radio'd in street racing. Luckily enough he told me to slow down and let me off with a warning.[hail]

I'm praying that I go to court and the judge give me a break. I've never had any other offense before.
