Water / Methanol Rain X De-Icer users.

Researching the ingredients for my water / methanol mix (I know its been done before) according to my findings Rain X De-Icer is not the best thing to use.

According to snow performance anything with propylene glycol can cause possible damage to your engine. Although Rain X De-Icer contains a fair amount of methanol (good) it also contains as much as 10% of propylene glycol (not good).

I recommend using 50% distilled water and HEET (98% methanol) for the remainder. I will be draining my reservoir of the rain x de-icer when I get a chance.

Not sure where you got this information from Eric but there ISN'T propylene glycol in it. I put up the information to this stuff a while back. There are 3 ingredients: 1 is WATER, 2 is METHANOL and 3 is BENZENEMETHANAMINIUM and whatever this is there is less than 1%, im thinking it is the dye maybe. LMAO haha [:p] [:p] please DON'T do that. Methanol acts as an octane booster while the water disipates heat in the intake track. This is done by using an injection kit like a Nitrous system to spray the mixture in the intake and in return you can run more boost and timing while on pump gas.

i dont plan on running this anytime soon but couldnt you boil the rain-x stuff to get the water out and increase the meth %? would this yeild better cooling?

Water actually has better cooling properties than the methanol, only thing about water is it is harder to make evaporate. Methanol is very much like rubbing alcohol and evaporates almost entirely by itself and very quickly. Water on the other hand is harder to evaporate. The higher percentage of meth just ensures the mixture is fully evaporated before it hits your motor. Last summer when our FL temps were in the 90's+ I was running primarily water with a bottle of heet mixed in, ran just as well [up]

The rain-x deicer is probably the best thing you shoud run...it is premixed at about 40% meth and 60% H20

I was getting some mixed information from a household website with ingrediants.. I will keep running the de-icer. I must say after I re-conneted the water meth after months of having it disconnected MAN talk about feeling like your car is CHIPPED again holy $hit! Damn this car pulls now!

Logging it tomorrow.. but T7-8 here I come.. right now its T6 and no audible knock and the car is a complete beast!

You information was partially correct...the Rain-X deicer that is an aeresol (to de-ice windows) has an assload of glycol in it.

I guess I'm old school. Washer fluid goes in the washer fluid reservoir. When I first read this thread I'm going, what the hey? I have Rain-X de-icer in my washer reservoir, how can that damage the engine?

It is more than "a few extra horses" and it just happens that this washer fluid (rain x de-icer) has alot of methanol in it so it is an easy premixed solution instead of buying gallons of water and bottles of methanol and mixing them in.

Methanol injection has been around for a long time and dramatically lowers intake air temps which equals power, and also acts as an octane booster due to the methanol so needless to say, it is like running race gas in your car everday at the cost of a $2 bottle of washer fluid per week instead of $5+ a gallon for race fuel (meth injection= race gas settings of boost and timing=your car goes fast all the time).

Also to add, On top of dropping IAT's it also drops EGT's drastically! The GTRS's biggest problem/drawback is the size of the stock 3 bolt flange. The small size of the flange creates a restricted flow and raises EGT's. With the meth injection, it drops the EGT's for the GTRS dramtically even when running more boost than is "recommended safely" with the GTRS

Only people that don't understand WAI are afraid of it. I had good friend of mine trying to convince me that WAI will cause compression loss, needless to say after some 6-7 months my compression is still the same..[up]
