View Full Version : Problems with my ride. Need advice...

So my A4 is not moving today anymore. I was on the highway, shifted to 4th because of slowing traffic (fucking rush hour), went to go back into 5th, nothing, just revs. Same with all the gears. I did get off the road and towed home safely. So the engine still runs fine. I can put the car into gear and it seems to engage (the spedo moves) but the car stays put. I was thinking that means the tranny is ok because that is where the speed is read from. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also I can not just shove the stick into gear, I still need to engage the clutch. All of this leads me to believe that the problem is after the transmition, transfer case maybe? I am just looking for things that I can do to further the trouble shooting process and find the problem. Any advice, tips, corrections are welcome.
btw its a 96 Quattro 99,5** on the clock.

there's no transfer case, the tranny has cv joints upfront, and a "standard" rear driveshaft coming out the rear to the diff. something is fubar'd inside your tranny

Doesn't sound like a tranny issue. But it could be that you snapped something after the tranny. Time to check the half shafts to see if anything looks broken(shaft or CV).

did that in my neon-differential pin backed out and shattered everything
gears were actually laying on the ground under the car. Used tranny from junkyard.
Obviously different setup w/quattro. $800 fix on neon not on audi.

I am thinking a cv or axle failiure. Did it clunk or anything?

Has it been clicking when turning lately at all?

I didnt make any noise when it happened or before that would lead me to beleive that there was a problem. As it sits now. I can put it into gear and let it idle. The speedo moves up to about 10mph in 1st and I can hear somthing moving under the car. but no movement of the car takes place.
