View Full Version : What The Hell is This? (Pics)

I went to replace my rear asjtray today and noticed that it has a strange "check engine" logo on it. When I opened the cover, the same logo is on the inside to the left on a smaller plastic cover to ...nothing.

It looks like a cigarette lighter should be in it's place. Very strange...can someone shed some light on what that logo stands for or does. Thanks.

lol ive wondered that too i think its like a port for vag-com that you can hook up

03-14-2007, 06:49 PM
odbII port....i always wanted to run a port back there.

03-14-2007, 06:54 PM
I believe the OBD-II port was there on the 96's.

thats where my OBD2 plug is.
on my 96 a4.

No shit...I guess that makes some sense. But it seems like a huge pain in the a$$ to move it back there...or even have back there from the factory. What's wrong with right above the hood release?

I was going to post this not to long ago and never got my DC camera out. This definitly clarifys that all up.

just so the vag cable doesn't run near my legs

03-14-2007, 08:09 PM
i think in models with the in-car telephone, theres a cig lighter there. not 100% sure on that though

03-14-2007, 08:13 PM
it used to be for the obd2 port but then they moved it to the official spot under the dash and didnt want to waste 5$ on making a new mold for it

just so the vag cable doesn't run near my legs

run it up near the door then over the steering column. thats what i do [drive]

i have the same thing on my 97

03-14-2007, 08:29 PM
My 2000 passat had one in the center console

i have the same thing on my 97

your's is there on a 97? mines under the dash. i guess the 97s had either or.

ive always wondered this, since there is one by the hood release in my 99.0. btw, i have the outlet for the in car telephone in my glove box, yet i still have this lame vag-com outlet in the back. so i guess so much for the cigarette lighter theory.

from what I heard, in Europe the mechanic working on the car isn't allowed to sit in the drivers seat, hence the plug being in the back.

I have it on my 99.5 but VAG is by the hood release as normal. It is there because that is where they used to put it and were too lazy to redesign the rear part of the console. As far as rumors of in car phone meaning there is a cig lighter there.......highly doubt it since my car (as should most of yours I assume) has the jack to connect a carphone in the center armrest.

I think the law was that the diagnostics has to be within a certain distance of the driver past a certain year so that is why they changed it....or at least thats the rumor I heard.

what is this BS i hear about 96 only?

i have it on my 99.

turbo kraut

they passed a law in 96 that all obd cables had to be within so many feet or something of the drivers immediate reach..... why i don't know, cause you can't do anything while driving, or shouldn't

this was done to make it easier to find..... old ob1 setups could of been anywhere fromn trunk to engine bay to under a pannel in rear passnger comparment

i know this cause when i was an emmision inspector, when you become a lead inspector they make you take a class telling you what and when emmision components were put on cars and what for ie pcv cats and so on so forth

funny, i have a 2001.5 and have it too......

03-15-2007, 07:59 AM
you have the OBD2 port there or you have that little plastic thing there? the obd2 port was only there on the 96's. the plastic cover was there on different years

03-15-2007, 10:48 AM
No, the port isn't there...which is actually what confused me the most. It makes sense now to know that the plastic part was simply never updated after they stopped putting the actual ports in that location.

My 98 Passat's center console has it. One of the rubber linings has the mark on it, and when you remove it from the console the cutout for the port is there.

Like mentioned earlier, since OBDII is now standard in every car since 1996, I believe they made it standard that the port has to be somewhere under the dash, and for whatever reason VW/Audi didn't want to spend the money to have the port removed and to have the icon taken away from it's respective location that are found elsewhere in the vehicle.

I personally would LOVE to reroute it to the center console, because no matter where I route the cable from it's current location, my leg still hits it, and it is rather annoying.
