yeah, side by side i gotta say, the audi looks way stronger from the front.

kinda reminds me of this:

Audi wins the beauty contest, Bimmer wins where it counts.

I drove my friends 2006 3 series the other day and I have to admit, it's definitely a more luxurious ride than my S4 (haven't driven any other BMW). Another thing I noticed is the hard "racing" feel of the brakes. One small push on the brakes and it feels like there's a set of 6 pistons in the front, and in the back. The only car I can compare to this kind of braking feel would be my very own RX7 FD which has a set of 6/6 piston brakes. With the tip-tronic, the 3 felt fast... and like kelticslob said, the BMW might win there it matters. Especially now with the twin turbos :)

^^This is where BMW shines, they have amazing braking response, a good power to weight ratio, and great out of the box handling. You are paying more for your car but you feel like it was worth every penny. Now what Audi needs to do is give us that same feeling at a competitive price. [up]

it is not really fair to compare old platform S4 to new platform 3er. Wait till B8 platform will be released and we will see where BMW will be then.

My friend switched recently from A4 to 335 and he is already dissapointed about the problem with the car (not sure about details but it is something with Turbo issues). He is willing to go back to Audi even Audi wasn't a problem perfect free car at all.

Me personally.... I had 5 series, 3 series and now Audi. I would never go back especially after thi sugly redesign they called progressive [:D]

I definitely agree. The Audi might be the looker, but the BMW puts its money where its mouth is, so to speak. Admittedly, Audi is making strides in this arena, but as long as they're playing catch-up to BMW, they won't be in the lead. Never follow, eh? Okay... [;)]

...but who said they playing any catch-up? obviously they don't, because as you see they engine lineup is very conservative.

It's all about to present your product to widest audience possible and Audi is doing amazing job. I work in marketing for over 10 years and I see it clearly how it works.

Yes they offer less powerfull engine, but with way complete package (design + look + ergonomics). Performance enthusiasts are still minority if you compare it to daily drivers and daily drivers are the target audience here. I personally wouldn't realy care about few HP shortage while I got everything nicely done and designed with great taste.

and for all those performance buffs..you can always use it as a good base for modification [;)]

well in reality, audi was in the lead until this year when they fall slightly behind. it seems that bmw and audi updates are staggered. it is wise to remember the saying "there is always a faster car"....unless ur in a veyron....anywho, s4 > 330... even competitive with the old e46 m3....then rs4 >x10 m3....this year, bmw will debut its v8 m3 to try to compete with audi's set of cars so that rs4 vs. m3 and s4 vs. 335i.....so audi was ahead. and then, come B8 time...audi will pull ahead again, i predict.

I own an 06 330xi, now. I have always wanted a 300hp coupe. And as much as I love the 335, it doesnt have All wheel drive, so its almost useless in the winter for me. And thats where the Audi shines... also you cant beat that cockpit!

i just purchased an RS 4 about a month ago. every time
i look at the car i like it more and more. having said that
i really like the new S5. i had an 05 A8 and some of the
things i really liked about it was the key less start, electro-
pneumatic parking brake and the location of the mmi controller.
it's nice to see the integration of these features into the new
platform. don't forget the b & o sound system!
keep in mind when comparing the S5 to the current 335i
the S5 has awd and i believe a little bit larger vehicle.
i feel that audi hit a home run with this vehicle. i can't wait to
see the RS version!!!!

The 330xi is a 4x4 car, and it doesn't have the quattro from the audi but it has a 4x4 system. Is it just a grammar mistake ?

I completely agree!! I used to just point out mirror housings on the road and say which one's looked nice or not. It's the little things I look at and for all the older Audi's the mirrors looked really elegant, and were one of the reasons I bought one. These new one's on the A5 look horrid. Too big yes very much like the Touareg and Q7s. At least they're not as bad as the dumbo ears on the IS350. Still, it's so good looking I drool just thinking about it, I'm so glad Audi didn't screw this one up. It's the car I've been waiting for [up] [up] [up] [up] [hail] [hail] [hail]

The A5 Will Finally Compete With Bmw's Coupes. I Honostly Beleive Thats The Main Reason Why Bmw 3 Series Sales Have Always Been Better Then The A4, Because Bmw Offers Two Doors. With The A5 The Buyer Now Has A Choice. Audi Is Always A Few Years Behind......look How Long It Took For Them To Realease A Suv.........

Very good points. But I think if Audi tuned their engines just slightly more aggressively & somehow managed to shave a few lbs across the lineup, they could maintain the overall package and appeal to enthusiasts at the same time, which would steal some potential BMW owners in the process.

Audi strategically creates problem points to maintain place behind BMW so as to avoid the overwhelming douchebag factor that BMW is saddled with. BMWs are great cars and I would not have a problem driving one, but they attract the tools. I will sacrifice some inferiority for (a) lower price; and (b) uniqueness.

That's actually an awesome way of looking at things and I agree completely. I've always like the underdogs, as long as the underdog has something going for it. The combination of (what I consider to be) superior interiors, very comparable performance and better looks (at least when you compare the latest generation) has me really wanting to put some cold, hard cash down for this car.

Are you serious that you would want the BMW just because its a few .10's faster. Who cares! If thats what you want, go buy a Suburu or Mitsubishi! These cars are about how you feel when you walk out to it every morning. How does it make you feel? How do you feel when you slide in behind the wheel? Design is everything! How often do you actually race someone? Come on everyone, chime in..... This is just so silly to me. Yes my car is modified but not so I can try to make it faster than a 335. If I wanted a 335 I would have bought one. I want the car that everyone doesn't have. I'm in L.A. and every douch bag on every corner already has a 335! And yes they drive around trying to race everyone but just like I told the last one that tried to race me, "you might beat me to the next light but I'll look better getting there......oh and when you can afford an S4 look me up and we'll hang out!"

The 335i is nice, but the S5 is better! Audi got it right with this one, 50/50 perfect weight distribution plus quattro and an FSI V8- what more could you ask for?

I have only 3 things to say on this:

A5 3.0 tdi...

co2 emissions 187
0-62 5.9 secs
Economy: 39.2 mpg

This COMBINATION beats any beemer..so for the eco conscious fan of acceleration (me), this car is the one and thats before you look at it. I have one on order, just hope it drives well...

As a new member and the owner of a 2005 M3 Competiton Coupe with Dinan aftermarket exhaust, I will be moving into an S5 as soon as they hit our shores.

The S5 has it all. Terrific looks, 355 hp., AWD, a vastly superior interior and a 6 speed. I would not even remotely consider the new M3. The car is OK in most respects but the front end is just butt ugly. BTW, most guys on the M3 Forum have the same opinion as me. Guys on the M3 forum want nothing to do with any Chris Bangle design and like many other BMW Car Club and Forum members we are defecting for Audi, MB, etc. When I saw the S5 and read the specs, I made my decision on the spot. I'm just another BMW defector to Audi and for good reason. One last issue, I'm not new to Audi. I owned and Pearl White 1988 5000 CS Turbo Quattro and a 1991 Audi 200 20 Valve Turbo Quattro. To me, the 1991 200 20V TQ was the best car I ever owned.

If thats the case then I rather have the new M3. [:D]

Before any of us US folks get too excited about that economy, that's 39.2 miles per Imperial Gallon.

Works out to very slightly less than 33 mile per US gallon.

Still excellent, but not quite as eye-popping.

I have a friend who traded in his B6 S4, a car he loved, for a new 335xi sedan with a manual transmission.. Yes, you can get the turbo motor in all wheel drive now.

His decision was financial - he wanted an RS4, but with a huge new house and two young kiddies, the savings justified the decision. The xi's aren't available with a factory sport suspension, so he figures with the chip, coilovers and exhaust, he should have a great all-rounder.

BUT... and here's the hard part... he doesn't feel the car even has the oomph of his old B6 S4. He got used to that V8 grunt, and his car, with an AWE exhaust, downpipes, and GIAC chip, really moved out, and sounded ungodly at full cry.

I'll admit that the Bimmer is tempting, but my A4 lease ends in August of '08, and an S5 should be the perfect upgrade. Unless I can swing an RS5..

So true.........Its the same in New York BMW's all over the place. Also if you want all out performance get a vette(best bang for the buck ever). Audi makes you feel good when you drive a car that has good interior and performance to go with it. My 96 has a better interior than my friends STI. At this point i was all set to get the Skyline GTR when it drops but after i saw the A5/S5 i think i know where my money is gonna go. Its like when you see a 745 you say " oh another person following the trend" but when you see a A8 you say " Damn that person has style and knows a good car".

End of rant.

More competitive price, better reliability and a sequential manual?

Though, I strongly suspect that the S5 will be far more reliable than the 335....
