View Full Version : S4 struts/springs on a A4?

Hey everyone,

I came across a really good deal on some Bilstein struts and H&R sport springs. Anyway, I was told that they would work on my 99.5 A4 Quattro since the parts are interchangeable. In fact the box for the springs actually says: For B5 A4 S4.

So anyway, what I am concerned about is how much will this lower my car? If I am correct, the S4 springs are going to be a bit stiffer since the S4 is heavier but some people are telling me that they are so stiff that they might even RAISE my car! I find that hard to believe. Anyway, it isn't a big deal since I could probably sell them for more than I bough them. But it would be awesome if I could use these on my A4!

Thanks in advance for any help! [;)]

I have a 1.8T AEB motor.

I am not talking about stock S4 springs, these are the exact springs that I have:

http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/shared/part_detail.cfm?PMaI=1&PMoI=4&PEI=6&PP=s4_27t_suspension.cfm&PPT=Suspension&IL=HRSportSprings

So if they lower that much on a S4 couldn't they lower a little bit on my A4?

Thanks for the responses!

you might possibly get a minimal drop but the fact is they are the wrong spring rate for your car and will not act how a proper suspension setup would. sell them and buy the proper stuff.

Thank you for using the picture of my car [:D]

Well... No, they won't. The reason for this is because the springs were designed for a car that weighs ~3600lbs vs your A4 which is ~3200lbs

My best guess would put you at a 3-4 fingure gap.

OK cool. Well the struts will still work then but I should just sell the springs and get some A4 springs?

Don't get any other springs than the ones that are made for 1.8T's. Believe me I've done it. If they're for a heavier motor, they will not only not be that low, they will be BOUNCY as hell, they will not be stiffer...Also the front will be higher... It's not worth buying something because it's cheap, when it's not intended for the car.

Get new springs man $200... and find some shocks/struts MADE for a 1.8T in classifieds, or ebay.

Check out my comparison on springs:

Before with 2.8 Struts:

After with 1.8T Struts:

It's not worth it, trust me.

Why wont the S4 shocks work? I understand that I need A4 springs now, but why not the shocks?

Because they too, whether you think or not, change the height difference.

The pictures are actually of 2.8 struts vs 1.8 struts, now that I remember correctly.

I couldn't figure out why the struts made a height difference, but that is why they make grooved ones. Here's my original post:

The struts work fine. I didn't notice any difference whatsoever between them and the 1.8t avant sport struts. I ran 35k mile used S4 struts with my stock 1.8t sport springs as a winter setup. In the spring I put them on a friend's car and put my coilovers back on mine. The next fall I found A4 1.8t sport struts with springs and installed them. I sold the struts in the spring and installed the coilovers. That fall I picked up S4 Avant struts and have been using them with the 1.8t sport springs last, winter, through summer, and throughout this winter. They all feel the same to me. They are trash after 60-90k miles. They get really soft and just can't control the body motion.

I've run the S4 and A4 struts on the track with H-Sport anti-roll bars. Again, there is no real difference. I had expected them to be slightly better damped than the A4 units to counter the addition energy from a heavier car but they felt the same. I also drove an S4 Avant as a company car and it definitely felt heavier than the A4. The S4's owner said my car felt very light and tossable compared to his. That to me means that his suspension wasn't up to the task of keeping the heavy car in check.

You guys are confusing me! [confused]

I think I will just sell the springs and keep the shocks and get some 1.8T race springs or something. Unless someone thinks this is a bad idea...

Tell me why my car lowered more when I replaced them with 1.8 Bilsteins...

I will if you tell me why mine didn't. [:D]

FWIW, a stock S4 sits really high in the front and low in the rear. My car was level with either set of struts. The S4 Avant is about a half inch lower in the rear and more than an inch higher in front compared to my winter setups.

Me on coilover and the S4 on stock suspension with 130-140k miles. Notice how much gap there is in the front of the S4.

From the front that thing is an off-roader.

This is the winter setup. The angle makes it look higher than it is. There is a 2 finger gap all around.

Didn't you run 2.8 struts? Maybe they are different than the S4 and 1.8t struts.

So you had S4 Bilstien struts with just H&R SPORT A4 springs and you still got that good of a drop? You car looks like it dropped pretty good!
