might need the key's that came with the head-unit.. depends on how the other owner installed it and what brand it is

i dont have any for the alpine. i bought the car with it. will i be able to rig something to act like the keys? ive done this before on my acura, but this is way different. my bentley manual doesnt give a good description, so im not even sure what needs to be done to get this out.

99.5 What i really need to know is what the keys actually do. Do they release something thats on the actual head unit itself or the rails that the stereo goes onto ?

^^theres little clips in the metal bracket that holds the stereo in, they need to be pushed out to slide the deck out. If you can't figure that out, i hope you pay somebody to change your oil and filter.

I know with most alpines you need the keys, if the guy who did the intall did a half assed job you can take the radio out with the basket still attached if not the basket was installed the right way and you need the alpine key.. so take the face plate off and see if you can move the unit out by taking a small scewdriver and prying out the unit.. after you take off the plastc surround

not to threadjack, but i was wondering the same thing about a sony single din headunit and a 97 A4.

whoa whoa whoa. alpines haven't used key's for a while. first take off the trim ring surrounding the face plate. then, slide up the two tiny black pins on each side of the unit. now with your third hand pull the radio out of the dash. i know most people don't have three hands but i'm confident once you figure out the logics you can handle it. just takes some workin. you can do one side at a time also.

the sony's, on the other hand, switched it up a little more often. your best bet is to insert flat pieces of metal into the sides of the unit, between the unit and the cage/shell/basket or metal thingy that goes around the head unit.

theres is a stamped sheet metal thing that fits around the unit to hold it tight against the dash

i think thats what he meant about a "cage"

just call crutchfield and ask them for the din tools. they are like a dollar

Again, there are no "special tools" for Alpine H/U's. just lift the tiny spring loaded locks behind the trim ring on each side of the radio and pull. I think he's got it by now.

There are no "special" tools for removing after marked HUs, but they do come with keys made of a more sturdy version of the metal that the"cage" that holds them in. Just stop by any Best Buy or Circuit City and ask one of the guys in the install bay to borrow a set for whatever HU you have. Remove the trim ring insert one key in each side of the HU. You will see the spot to stick them in. Insert them until you hear the click. then use the keys to pull the unit out. Give them back the keys. Say thank you. If they are nice about it and do it for you, try to tip them a buck or two.

Are my noob post not showing up yet? :) You won't find Alpine keys we use a pick tool. But for the Sony unit, it would be eaier to do what AnthraciteA4 said.

My apologies. I know that sony, kenwood, pioneer, and jvc all use keys so I figured that Alpine would too.
