View Full Version : ::::::::My weekend interior renovation on the B5 :-)

This past weekend was a good one! I decided to wrap my headliner, pillars, and armrest in UltraSuede. I have never done anything like this before, but I am a DIY kind of guy. I have done basicly all the work on my car; paint, brakes, oil changes, ect ect. So, I thought I should branch out and try working with Suede.

All together it was not that hard. I would say that the hardest part was dealing with my freaking roll bar and trying to work around it. [wrench]

I purchased 2 yards of Black Suede, spray adhesive, and 8 sticks of hot glue from JoAnn Fabrics. My total bill was only like $16[:D] After taking the ten million pieces off the headliner I dropped it out and began wrapping.

Here is the pic of BEFORE

Stuff all off

Wrapping it

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v468/a4robm/IMG_1782.jpg

And Finally, the finished product.

Problem: The sunroof slide cover can not come off unless the whole assembly is dropped, so I just decided to do something different and wrap it in bandana material. RIGHT NOW IT IS NOT ALL THE WAY ON. I just stuffed it up there to get the idea of what it might look like IF I DO GO THROUGH WITH THE BANDANA idea. so please, dont flame

lol i'm the same way...I'd probably end up doing a tan suede similar to the color in my Passat...that way the 'rubbing' wouldn't show as much....or atleast i would hope not.

I just laid it right over. I used just a generic spray adhesive then hot glued the sides.

Yes, using the trimmed off scraps from the sunroof and edges game me enough to do the pillars, and also the armrest

ok i know this is going to sound like a dumb question...is there a reason why you have the bandana covering your sunroof? also on a scale of 1-10 how would you rate this?? because i really like the way it came out..and id do it on my car...also what brand of adhesive did you get??
edit- never mind i actually read your post above about the bandana...

hehe thanks for reading[cool]

The adhesive is just a generic fabric adhesive I got at the craft store. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being hardest I would rate this DIY project about a 7. It was pretty easy, but a PITA because I had to work around the roll bar.

For the door panels, I suggest installing the suede from the front side of the door card without removing the actuall door card... sort of like the leatherette is installed if that makes since, because its a really big PITA if you actually take off the door card insert and wrap it. Just a little heads up.

did you just peel the leatherette off and glue the suede on? You did this without even removing the pannel? Have any pics from the install?

SoFresh
01-17-2007, 09:47 AM
I dont have any pics, my digital has been broken for a long time now, but you really dont have to remove the panels, you can pop out the leatherette, use a blow dryer or heat gun to heat up the glue, then pull it off. Then simply use those as your templates, however cut the suede a little larger then the leatherette to give you more flex and more material to work with. Then spray glue in the middle of the door card, then you can actually tuck the suede up in the edges just like the leatherette was held in place, just use a dull butter knife to tuck it up in there tight. Of course make sure there are no creases and its tight, I hope that makes sense, lol. Its hard to describe without pics.

I used black, however I did buy red suede racing seats that arent installed yet, if I was ever going to install them I would have redone the door inserts in red suede. my shift boot is black with red stitching, and the headliner suede is black, as so are the pillars and rear deck lid/armrest.

is there any "play" once you spray the glue down or does it wanna grab the fabric right away? reason i'm asking is because i've been pondering the idea of doing something like this...

i actually recovered my center arm rest with suede this morning and the spray adhesive i had wouldnt let me maneuver the fabric around once it was laid on the adhesive, grabbed immediately

Looks like you answered your own question about it grabbing. Just spray the adhesive on, lay the suede onto it, then once it has dried, strech the edges around the back and hot glue itdown.
