I've had similar problems in the past, but not with my A4. My old GS-T was like this for a while, and it turned out that air bubbles can get caught in the thermostat, and then the thermostat won't read properly. In my case, it led to my car overheating like a bia bia, and a blown headgasket. Good times...

yeah bro my car does the exact same thing, but nothing has ever gone terribly wrong from it. it still produces heat and works fine, the thermo just doesnt read properly which is fine by me because i dont want to spend money to have it fixed.

if by chance you do decide to take it to a profesional, let me know what happens because im curious.

hope everything works out alright, and i wouldnt worry about it too much at the moment. its most likely a messed up sensor or something of that nature.

If your car is an aeb engine code, then it is really easy to change the thermostat. I have a 98 1.8t and it took me around 30 minutes to do myself. You can do it from underneath the car. No need to take off the front. I paid 33 dollars for the thermostat and o ring from the dealer. The instructions are in this post.

Just go down to where daft gives a great simple explanation how to change the thermostat. My car now warms up in around 5 minutes and the temp gauge always sits at the 12 oclock position. Worth doing the labor yourself. I heard it's much harder to do on cars 2000 and up though.

I did the thermostat 6 month ago w the TB, and yesterday I replace the coolant temp. sensor because a code P0118 but after I did it, the temp. gauge is giving me false readings it stays on C 1st mark

Do you think is a good idea to vag the car? because the check engine L. went off by itself before I replace the temp. sensor.
Maybe the light went off but the code is there and it's giving fase readings
