Friend of mine took her 2.8 A4 in and they said she has a hole in the oil pan and quoted $590 to replace it. This sounds insane.

I wouldnt mind doing it for her, but I would like to know how difficult it is to remove the pan and what the cost is for a new one. Doesnt sound too bad, just drain oil remove bolts and replace, right!???[wrench]

The upper or lower pan? I had to replace my lower oil pan ( offroading experience ). I just got one of ebay and replaced it in 3 hours ( fully cleaned everything before putting it back on ).

here is one:

$590 is absurd... you can get a new lower pan for about $100 and install it in a few hours or less.
