Hey there, I'm new here and don't know a whole ton about the common problems and such with Audi's, so bear with me.
My dad has a 98 Audi A8 Quattro with the Tiptronic 5 speed transmission. Recently, it threw a CEL and he went into a shop to have it pulled. He cannot remember the code number right now, (will post is as soon as I get it) but he does recall that it had to do with a malfunction in Solenoid number 27 in the transmission. Has anyone ever heard of this before, and is it going to result in a new tranny or are there any other options?
Thanks fellas! [az]

no, he wont need a new tranny. The solenoid can go bad and replaced fairly cheaply, if done somewhere other than your audi stealership. The only time you should start looking for a new tranny is if its throwing you into limp home mode.
Do you know anyone that has a vag com?
With this you can get a more specified answer.
search the forums for vag com locater.
good luck and welcome

We did go to an independent shop to get it checked out, and for some reason my dad was under the impression that he had to get a whole new tranny because the transmission is sealed or something weird like that. But that didn't make sense to me, and they may have been screwin with him. Is this solenoid replacable DIY or would I have to go to a shop. I do most of my own work on my car, so I could handle most wrench work, but don't have any tranny specific tools.
I had a Vag Com until I let a buddy use it for his B6 A4 and I never saw it again, he's looking for it though. I'll get you guys a code ASAP. Thanks for the information.
Last thought, how much does this solenoid go for and where is a good site to order it off of? I hate having the shops order them because they always seem to mark them up. Thanks!

Before you just start replacing stuff, Vag the car. and have a look at audipages.com. That should get you going in the right direction.
Also, Check out the audiworld D2 A8 forum, there are many of us there that can help to diagnose the problem. But try searching the forum before asking the question.
