The guys at the bodyshop where I'm having the new S4 front bumper put on and painted said that said and done with all the parts it would be around $1000 for the bumper without painting it...they said I need a bunch of shock absorbers for each side or something and a bunch of misc. parts that would cost extra because you cant just swap the bumpers over?

I thought all I had to pay was $580 from the dealer and everything was pretty much a direct swap...

i thought that too. A grand? no way. For $580 you get the rebar and all you need is the two shock absorbers. I think they are like $15. my body shop had a hard time getting mine to line up until they used the s4 shocks absorbers. I've read its a direct swap, in my case it was not.

thats what i thought too.

im getting one from a guy i know within a couple of weeks and was under the impression that they swap directly...

either the bodyshop is trying to fuck you over, or, the bumpers actually do swap. Let me know when you find out cause i need to know this too.

easy solution is to get the bumper shocks along with the bumper from the dealer and try to get it to line up with out. if it looks good then you are fine and return the shocks. If not, just use the s4 shocks. All other mounts are the same. You will also need the 3 grills and filler plate...which comes out to like 250...so maybe the body shop quoted you for those too.

If im doing the rs4 mod do I need the grills though?

yup, not the center one though. You can put a euro plate in the filler spot though and save you 70 for that plate. So yeah, you'll need 2 side grills. there is a set for 2 in the for sale section btw.

I hate front bumpers.

my bumper was a direct swap over, no bumper shocks or anything. like poopie said you will need the 2 side grilles. the bumper already comes with the center grille on and rebar and all the new. for the RS4 mod, you have to pull out (in my case, dremel out) the grilles from the 2 grille surrounds and center grille already in the bumper. good luck.

mind was direct swap. No they dont even have lower valence for S4 front. Everything is there and also swap/move the washer too

just ask for a S4 bumper from the dealer (if your getting it new) and it comes with everything you need except the 2 grilles and foglights(optional, not neccesary but the grille have holes for them)

unless you get the Canadian grills which have no opening for fogs.

K well I talked to the body shop again and they said that they had to get the s4 bumper shocks for the bumper to fit and it the shocks were $115 a side...im so confused

AudiSport12

no sir you dont NEED them, sometimes they make the bumper fit better but you can do a direct swap with just the bumper and no shocks. thats what alot of people do. i wouldnt buy the shocks. and if they quoted u $115 a side thats a rip. just buy the bumper and 2 grilles. thats all you need (and foglights if wanted)

well don't I want the bumper to fit as good as possible?

AudiSport12

im sure you do. mine fits perfectly without the shocks as does 98% (not actual number, obviously) on here. in some cases like nismosx had something was out of wack with his. its more likely than not that you will have a perfectly fitting bumper. i guess i worded it wrong in the previous post, some people say you need them, some dont. you dont. lol

what do the shocks even do? and whats the difference between the s4 and a4?

Poopie

If i had to pay 115 per side, I would have just made the stock shocks work. I believe the s4 ones are shorter, so try compressing the old ones in a bit if you bumper won't fit.

the bumper shocks are for absorbing the impact of a front end collision.
as far as the difference btwn the A4 and S4's, other than the part numbers, i dont know. they may be a bit shorter if i remember correctly? i should know, i worked in Audi parts dept. for a while.

edit: damn you poopie you beat me to it.

OUCH. I have put 2 different S4 bumpers onto my 2000 A4 using the stock A4 shocks both times and didn't cost me more then just the cost of the bumper(with rebar) each time.

Thats rediculous, keep an eye out for a local S4 selling their bumper, a jukyard, or try www.Shokan.com. You can swap the rebar from the A4 bumper. Plus its a perfect opportunity to learn how to paint.

I did this with the RS4 mod and cost me a total of $350
