I am strongly considering getting my tails tinted, but first i wanna see what they look like on other peoples cars. I have a 99.5 and i was gonna get the whole light tinted but leave a clear strip where the reverse lens is. thanks.

Yea they're the gayest stockers ever... I like 'em painted though, too. I did them myself - scuff, clean, prime, wheel paint. Didn't take too long. Centers took a while since I had to pop the rings out of the caps.

Man, your car is Sick!! Everytime I see it, I want mine to be looking like that.
How many coats of nightshades did you use? I'm thinking I want to go just a little lighter than what you have.

holy r-dub thats sooo dark lol. Any problems with the smokies? I want to do the e-bay led's smoked. so hot. How many coats did you use on your application r-dub? I think I'd go as dark as that if I were black, well my car. I'm curious to the proper steps of applying the tint as well.

With nite-shades (which is what I used as well), I have found that it works best if you paint them till they're black, and wetsand/buff to your preference. I need to re-do the avant's tails since they're a little light and not glossy-reflective like clear coat yet.

I did my Jetta tails with Nightshades but didn't clear coat and I thought it looked great..

I think if I do these I'll use it though, those look nice.

Well. You need to remove the painted part below the tailight before you spray. You could just "tape it off" but that wouldn't result as well I don't think. After that go out to your local pep boys/advanced auto/autozone and pick up 2 things:
#1 total prep (a deep cleaner you will apply before sparying anything, it removes waxes, dirt, brake dust, etc...)
#2 Plastic adhesion promoter

What I did:
#1 Remove tailights
#2 remove painted lower section from tailights
#3 Deep clean (use new/clean cotton cloth 3-4 times with cleaner to be sure)
#3a. If you feel like taping off your reverse lights (I recommend this because you can't see jack shit at night when you back up if you don't, plus it gives the tails a more stock-like look) tape these sections off now. Be careful! If you attempt to "cut away" the tape with a razor blade while it's on the tails you will scratch the lenses
#4 Spray on a thin coat of plastic adhesion promoter
#5 Go drink a beer (or wait about 10 minutes but no more than 20. If you wait too long the adhesion promotor will no longer be useful)
#6 immediately spray on one coat of VHT nightshades (I looked around at autozone and advanced auto for the product but ended up just getting it online. One covering coat of VHT will result in a "smoked" look. While 2 coats or more will just make the lense darker and darker. I used 2 thin coats on mine.
#7 allow to dry for about 3-4 hours so you don't mark up your good work with finger prints.
#8 Be sure the VHT is dry to the touch and apply 2-3 coats of any type of automotive clear coat. I used Duplicolor rattle can style
#9 Allow to dry for about 4 hours or preferrably overnight
#9a. If applicable, remove tape from the reverse lights slowly and carefully.
#9b. If the VHT went through the tape in some areas or you want to "clean up the edges" you can take some laquer thinner and a q-tip and slowly with a steady hand remove excess paint from areas it shouldn't be.
#10 I wetsanded with 1500-2000 grit sand paper to remove some of the orange peel from the clear coat (i'm a perfectionist) and then brought the gloss back with some 3m Perfect-It 3 machine polish
#11. Put them bishes back on and enjoy picking up a new variety of women
#11a. Drink a beer, get a lawn chair and just look at your work.

As always painting is a concept that takes time. Poppycock your way through the process and that's the result you'll get. Take your time. Be careful. And with all paint make sure you do it in 50-80 degrees F with low humidity (shouldn't be hard this time of year in a heated garage)

3 coats.

No problems - still visible from 300ft, so no DOT violations.

Had a cop even comment on them once.
