View Full Version : Coolant Q, somewhat urgent

I just did a LOT of maintenance to my car yesterday (t-belt, water pump, coolant flush, etc.) and surprisingly hardly any problems, until today. Driving down the highway my upper radiator hose decided to take a hike, lost all my new coolant. I had a jug of water in my car so I put all that in and limped it to a gas station, filled it with more water, so now I had roughly 80-90% water in there. Being Sunday the dealership was closed and nobody sells G12 around here. Now my question, since it's freezing at night here I HAD to fill it with extended life, coolant claiming any make/model was okay. Is this going to hurt the cooling system in my car? I can easily go to the dealer tomorrow and grab some actual G12 but no point if this is gonna be fine. Thanks for the input.

you'll be fine. just flush it out before adding g12

do not use the any make and model coolant for long, over night and a trip to the dealer is fine but get the g12 back in as soon as you have a chance

Thanks guys [:)] and thanks audiluver for the offer but my guess is I'll spend just as much in gas just getting there (hr drive one way).. we'll see what the stealership wants for a couple gallons though [:p]

that's why i use zerex g05 coolant. available at most autoparts store and completely compatiable with all coolants. if you insist on using g-12, get the purple g12+ since pink g12 is now longer used.

Is this shown somewhere on the bottle? I'm partially colorblind, not enough cones in my eyes and all shades of red/purple/pink look the same to me [:p]

pink g12 not used anymore? i was at the dealer about 1.5 months ago, and that was what they gave me. $26 / gallon.

no new audi/vw uses g12 (pink). (a few years since they made the switch). that's not to say, they won't sell it to you.

they all use g12+ (purple) b/c if someone mixes g11 (green) with pink or doens't get ALL of the old coolant out, it leads to deposits that will clog your cooling system. (need a thorough flushing to get all g12 out). well documented over on aw.

g05 is what mercedes and bimmers use and much easier to find and also compatiable with mixing g11, g12, g12+ if someone mixes of doesn't flush all the old coolant out. it's also a lot cheaper ($9).

$26/bottle of coolant is way too $$$ imo.

just my 2 cents.

Give your local VW a call or visit. You might save a bit. I bought some g12 coolant from a local VW dealer, it was $12/gal. I didnt know what Audi was selling it for, i didnt check with them.

Important: Dont tell VW you have an Audi. They will turn you away or give you some ignorant excuses: "Oh those cars are different." [rolleyes]

I forked over $22/bottle, got two gallons just in case (my bad luck). This is also coming from the dealership who wanted $64 for a 710n.
