What is the comparison between the stock Side Mount Intercoolers? I'm assuming that they would go up in size or volume - RS4>S4>A4, but I could be wrong there. Also, are the later B5 intercoolers any different than the earlier, DBW ones? What about the differences between B5 and B6?

Any info would be great.

This is not a discussion about FMICs or why they are better, etc.

I have looked around and seen the post about the TyrolSport SMIC upgrade, but not much else.

contact Mike at Tyrol directly (he's pretty responsive with emails) - he will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

iirc the A4 and S4 SMIC's are the same size. the RS4's are the larger ones that are rated at about 200-250chp a peice

I've thought about a water sprayed Tyrol SMIC but still think a FMIC is the way to go. There just isn't that much airflow that can be ducted back to a SMIC.

A S4 SMIC isn't a direct bolt on. I've tried and it wouldn't work. I don't remember what all was involved but I think the outlet was in a different spot. Probably something easily solved. I tried it at the end of building my engine and was tired of screwing around. At that point I really just wanted the car put back together.

Awesome - Thanks for the info guys. If any one can find any data sheets or specs (dimension, etc.) that would be awesome too.

when you start comparing b5 s4/rs4 cores don't forget awe and ER cores respectively.

You could always get the tyrol, put a fan on it, get an s4 fender liner and spray it too. that'd be about the best you're gonna get with a stock mount. unless you do like me.....but mines not finished so i don't want to say much yet.

Has ER decided to do a SMIC for the 1.8t? I asked when they debuted the S4 units and he was delightfully surprised by the interest. It seemed that at that point it hadn't dawned on him to do it but he said it be doable.

an ER sidemount would be cool. Is the production fmic from ER done yet?

doesn't it all boil down to surface area as well? I mean a smic can never have the surface area for cooling that a fmic can. Forget about efficiency and design, how can even the best smic even compete w/ a good fmic if it just doesn't have the surface area?

I was referring to the b5 s4 awe and er cores. No it wouldn't be hard to adapt one to a 1.8t [;)]

Still not publically released but I have one as do a few others.

I wish someone could get their car on the rollers before one of these tyrol smic and after then that would tell us how much better than stock these are.

I'm sure they're going to be way better than stock. I just don't know if they'll be able to compete w/ the leading FMIC's out there. I'd like to be shown otherwise though. I would definitely prefer to run a SMIC over a FMIC, all things being equal, at least for the sleeper aspect.

Street logging would be a better indicator of intercooler performance. All a dyno comparison will show is how quickly they heat soak and that is dependent on the dyno facility's fans.

ER and boost factory should post up some pics/logs!

I like the samco hoses. I have the APR motorsport ones. They make it more of a straight shot going from the IC to the TB.

That is a pretty crazy bend and I've never been a big fan of it. It just isn't worth putting any money into it with a K04 still on there. When it gets to be BT time I'll just do everything once and do it right. Or try to - things always end up getting tweaked here and there.
