View Full Version : Guess B7 front brakes are bigger than the B6 ones?!?!

Made a valiant attempt to put on my snow tires yesterday. Started on the back right wheel --- stock summers came off and snow wheel on without incident.

Move my way to the front, only to realize that the steel wheel that I have my snows on would not clear the stock front brakes. Apparently the front brakes on the B7 are larger than the B6?!

So now I'm in a situation. Anyone know what size steel wheels I will need? I wasn't really aware steel wheels came in different offsets?!

Also thinking about selling my entire set and buying 17" snow tires (rather than the 16 inchers on there now) since I have a set of 17" old BBS wheels sitting in the garage. Anyone have any sense of how much I could get for (4) 16" Dunlop SP Wintersport snow tires on steel wheels (probably 6k miles on them)??

Thoughts?

not sure about the pricing for selling those. but the B7 brakes are the same as the B6 S4 brakes so they are indeed larger

^correction, the b7 brakes are the same caliper and carrier, but different rotor size i believe, the S4 is slightly larger...i think

dang, found out the hard way, should've searched on here before your attempt. btw, i usually always start with the fronts.

correction: same caliper, DIFFERENT carrier, s4 front rotors are 15mm taller in diameter. which actually makes the B6/7 S4 clear more wheels than the B7 A4s.

Yeah -- Sucks ... wasted an hour of my life -- oh well.

At this point, just trying to figure out which steel wheels I need to buy from Tirerack -- I guess I'll head to their website and start sniffing around.

I guess it's a problem that $200 can fix (4 steel wheels @ $50 / wheel [headbang] [down] )

EDIT: Is it possible there are no steel wheels that will clear my front stock B7 brakes? Just went on tirerack and they do not offer steel wheels for my car!

I've been told no 16" steelies will fit the B7. Some 16" alloys will fit, depending on the spoke design.

I've been told no 16" steelies will fit the B7.

I did a little homework and I'm pretty sure this is the case. This really sucks -- going to have to find some cheap alloys that will clear. OR --- I have 17" BBS wheels I can throw on, but need to then buy 17" snow tires and sell these.

There is a factory 16 inch wheel that clears, maybe someone who bought a base model has a set lying around...
