I know some of you guys have the SPP kit but have any of you guys used a junkyard fan ? Im in the middle of a timing belt /waterpump change and fubared my clutch fan. Im heading to the junkyard tomorrow morning for an electric equivelent and bolting it up to my fan shroud. PS is there a temp switch i can hook a relay up to?

what are you planning to use in place of the clutch fan pulley?

The pulley is intact i took a sazall to the neck of the clutch fan. The front looks like the SPP kit aluminium holdown bracket. The hex bolt in the back of the clutch fan stripped so I couldnt get it loose.

update: I sourced a fan from a Volvo 940. The diameter was the right size but the width of the fan was too wide so it was rubbing against the radiator and engine. Going to look for another one tomorrow morning.

I used used a shorter belt, 1165 or 1195 mm five groove. Deleted the pully completely.

What kind of fan did you use?

Got mine from Supreme PowerParts, made by SPAL. Bimmerzone also has them, usually in stock. SPP can be spotty with backorders.

update. After an intensive search in the junkyard I was able to find a fan thin enough from a late model Ford Taurus 3.0 V6 for $20. Its a dual speed fan. I cut the plastic from around the motor for a little more clearance. I got a dual fan relay from the Volvo 940 and am wiring it in. Does anybody know what color wires are the trigger for the temp switch?

Buttoned everything up. The gap between the fan and the waterpump has to be only about 1 mm though. Mounted the fan relays on the plastic ABS cover under the cover are plugs that go to the fan and temp switch. Is there a -ive switched output in that area I can tap into?

Got it to work . Tied it into the temp switch on the radiator and it keeps the engine cooler than the clutch fan. Not bad for a $20 mod[:D]
