Hey all,

I'm looking at a few Audis I'm interested in. Think you can give them a quick look over and see if theres anything that pops out at you?

The first:
99.5 1.8T Quattro 5speed
120k miles
Cloth interior :(
$7,970
http://cars.kbb.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&paId=213170620&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&recnum=4&leadExists=true&criteria=K-%7CE-%7CM-_4_%7CB-9000%7CD-_21_%7CN-N%7CR-30%7CI-1%7CP-PRICE+descending%7CQ-descending%7CZ-06779&aff=carskbb

99.5 (I think) 2.8 Quattro 5speed
130k miles
Leather interior :)
$8,000
http://cars.kbb.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=22&paId=204035610&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=100&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&recnum=3&leadExists=true&criteria=K-manual%7CE-ANY%7CM-_4_%7CH-%7CD-_21_%7CN-N%7CR-50%7CI-1%7CP-PRICE+descending%7CQ-descending%7CY-_1999_%7CX-popular%7CZ-06779&aff=carskbb

So the price is the same, one comes with leather, but 10k more miles. I still haven't decided whether I want the 1.8t or not. Reliability comes before performance, but as I understand a 1.8 can be just as reliable if taken care of properly.

So what do you think?

EDIT: On a related note, is there an easy way to tell by looking at the car if it has the sport package or not?

If car resembles roller skate = non-sport...haha

Seriously, the sport version sits a little lower and looks more "normal" in ride height. From those pics, I'd guess that neither has the sport package...just a guess, though...

Or you can look at the springs... I believe the sport package springs are red iirc. If you are about reliability, then yes 2.8. It is true the 1.8ts can be just as reliable if maintained well, but in the 120k previous miles, you have no idea how it was taken care of... even with service record I would be uneasy if reliability was a big concern.

And if you want reliability, especially over 100K miles, go with the 2.8. By 130K miles, the V6 engine is just getting broken in. Suspension components, thats another story...you'll probably have the standard leaking seals or control arm/tire rod end problems associated with B5s.

Get whatever service records you can. Make sure the oil was changed regularly (every 5-7K miles) with full synthetic oil. And of PARAMOUNT importance....get the timing belt history. Both cars should've had their timing belts, tensioners and water pumps changed at about 70K miles. Heck, at this point, you're looking at having that job done again in another 2-3 years. (The original tensioners on those cars were good until 60-70K miles...the updated tensioners, which should have been installed when your belt got changed, are good for 90K miles).

trust me if you actualy drive your car hard you don't want leather by anymeans .... i take almost everyturn all out and end up hitting the center console or holding the shifter or usin my elbow to hold myself in place ...

Leather is just... one of those things. Ya know? There are plenty of fast cars. There are plenty of luxurious cars. The combination of the two is few, so why pass it up?

like said many times on previous threads, if you just want a car to cruise arround and reliability at those 100K plus miles, go with the 2.8, but in the other hand if you are looking into modding the car go with the 1.8t is alot better to work on, reliability it all depends on how well you maintain it.
shit, i just hit 130K miles and just did a timing belt kit change, and it is as smooth as new. good luck finding what you want, and make sure you stick around, AZ will help you alot with car issues (and personal too, lol)
AZ ftw!!!!!!!
