View Full Version : DIY clear corner 1 piece mod (pics)

#edit: to end any confusion. these are the stock 1 piece headlights that come with 99.5+. basically, if you drill out the tabs holding the amber plastic in place, it will slide out and allow you to break it up and remove it from the inside, resulting in free ecodes. f'that $500 bs ;)

little weekend mod action. followed the article on audiworld which was pretty easy. the driver side turn signal light was a bitch to get back in since there was only enough slack to do it with the headlight back in.

in the last 3 pics, you can see why it's absolutely necessary to get a non-amber bulb (that still shines amber of course). in the straight on one, you can see how the light actually reflects in the rest of the housing... blah. i'll pick up some this week prolly.

Looks good. Along with what the other guys said, you should look into patching up those holes in your front bumper. It doesn't seem like it'd make much of a difference, but it looks much cleaner.

haha nice man glad to see you went this route instead of dropping huge cash on ecodes! well done.

but like mentioned above, slap those rings back on there. i dont know how you would come about putting them back on, might be kind of dificult with that plastic ring near the hood latch. only way i could think is clear zip-ties but that would probably look tacky. or some 5 min. epoxy might do the trick.

the light output from the factory projectors is fine for me, so the only benefit that i saw from getting clear corner ecodes was to pay ~$500 to get rid of the amber corners.

Somehow I can't get used to the orange corners. Maybe because I was born and raised in Albania, Europe and I never actually saw orange cornered cars until I moved to Jersey 3 years ago. I was one of the lucky ones to get them for low 300 (halogen) two years ago. It was my fourth mod after exhaust, chip, intake.

i can't justify spending that much money on improved lighting when stock seems to work just fine. everywhere i go is plenty well lit, and to get clear corners. i'm just glad i had the 1 piecers and could do it for free. i consider it saving me money because i would have had to do it eventually otherwise.

I did this mod because it was free, I was bored, and I had nothing else to do.

If I don't like the final outcome, I was planning on buying the ecodes anyways. We'll see. [:D]

I have a few other things to do before the lighting becomes an issue.

like i said, i kinda dig it with them off right now. maybe i'll get some zip ties and see if i like them back on and then put it on right.

now when you guys talk about the bulbs - the chrome and blue ones - i was at autozone and they had these ones that weren't really chrome, but weren't really blue.... they were more like... rainbow oil slick/dishwater soap bubble color, make sense? i didn't think they would look very good since they looked all rainbow reflective. are those considered chrome?

It's just a Kamei grill. If you take the stock rings off of the stock grill, there are like 10 or so tabs on the back to hold it in place. I messed with it for about an hour to figure out a way to stick it. I ended up breaking all but 3 tabs off (that's all the would fit flush). Then I drill tiny holes into the tabs. I then used very small zipties to secure from the back of the rings.

It took me a couple tries to make it look good.

For pics, i'll have to get those a little later.

And yea the 'dish water' bulbs are the blue ones.. Trust me, they looks sweet. The chrome ones have a chrome top, and the middle will glow amber. It's chrome so it will just blend.

loustylez
11-15-2006, 07:56 AM
i actually thought about drilling holes through those tabs and zip tying it that way. they seemed thick enough and big enough to not crack when drilling through them or something. i'll give it a shot i guess.

1 ate T
11-15-2006, 07:59 AM
It's worth a shot.. I originally did it with intentions of just trying to see what it would look like.. In the end it ended up working better than I'd hoped, and they're still secure. I've been about 115mph + and it's still very snug. was one of the better DIY mods i've done.

nice work fred. i agree, it made a much bigger difference than i thought it would.

i backed in to my spot in the parking garage today just so i can walk out and see them from a distance and check it out when i leave today ;)

speaking of the s-yo's, here's what LLTek says:
http://www.diandata.com/temp/syo.jpg

does this mean i can buy the single element bulbs, and using some kind of supplied attachment it will fit directly into the stock bulb connector with no modifcations? does this mean by doing this i will eliminate the lights being on w/ the headlights and only come on when signaling?

You can make it so you have no corner lights but your turn signal still works just by cutting one of the 3 wires coming out of your turn signal harness. Some people will flame you for doing this because they say it is dangerous and or illegal, but I have had it done for like 5 months with no problems from cops. If you have 1 piece housing it still throws plenty of light over to the corner so it can be seen from the side.

Yes according to LLTek, if you buy the single element bulb, it will only turn on during signaling, and they provide the adapter with the purchase of the bulb.

i kinda like the idea of buying the ones from lltek that are "built in" not to turn on when the headlights are but only when signalling. i like that better than cutting wires. i've read that you can also pull that wire out and cover it but... whatever.

i'll go with lltek and see what happens.l

#edit: scratch that, lltek was $33 for the bulbs and i asked how much shipping would be and he's like "um... about $20 i think". i went with the other site. thx for the link.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. The stealthauto bulbs carry a lifetime warrenty, so if they go out, you will get a new set.

Plus they say they have the best stealth lights on the market, but I'll have to wait and see. I'll post some pics when I get them on the car.

I got my bulbs from stealthauto also, but I also got an email saying that they discovered a design flaw on the 3357/3457 batch. I was told that the bulbs can overheat and cause damage. They said that they fixed the problem and another batch was being shipped out and to throw away the bulbs. You might want to check your emails, but here is what I was told in the email:

Hello everybody!

You are getting this email because we have recently shipped you our 3357/3457 bulbs on 11/29/06. You may not have received the package yet.

It is important to note only 18 people were affected.

Unfortunately we have detected a serious quality control issue with the latest batch of 3347/3457(same bulb). The bulbs will overheat in an unsafe manner quickly and then fail. We realize you may have been waiting for awhile as these bulbs have been on backorder status. We sincerely apologize for the additional delay this will cause.

We have already made the necessary manufacturing adjustment to correct this issue and we do expect a new shipment to arrive shortly.

-When you receive the bulbs we must instruct you to dispose of the bulbs immediately and do not attempt in any circumstance to install them!

We hope you can understand that we are sorry for the delay but we want to ensure that we deliver a safe high quality product that we feel confident on backing up with our lifetime guarantee!

We know we can’t make up for the delay but we plan on including a small gift with the future shipment.

I just pull out the headlight and do it that way, cause it's easier to work with the bulb for me. [:D]

I would also call just to make sure. I will be calling first thing Monday morning.

no man, like the wire for the turn signal bulb harness only comes out just barely enough so that it will fit in to the headlight when it's all the way in. if you pull the headlight housing out, the bastard doesn't even nearly stretch that far. i had to stick my fingers in from the side (turn signal side) with it almost all the way in so my fingers would barely fit and look in from the front to match up the slots, which there's only 1 tab on that side now the others broke off. looks like someone took the headlights out and ripped it out. it fits fine though. just a BITCH to work with.

maybe i just won't use my turn signals on the way to work this morning ;)

Yeah but the turn signal lights still turn on when you turn on the headlights, so you shouldn't turn on your lights at all, until you can take them out just to be safe.

this DIY shows that you drill the holes from behind the headlight, while others describe it as drilling up through the bottom. I havent removed my headlights yet, but will there be distinct areas in the back of the housing where I need to drill, or is it a guessign game?
