View Full Version : Before and After fogs.....

A fellow 'ziner was kind enough to cut me a deal on some Hoen H11 bulbs, so I threw them in this weekend.

For the record, I tried every possible way to find a solution OTHER than removing the bumper for us non S-Liners......

No luck. The bumper comes off.

Anyways, as soon as I figure out the bulbs or track down the thread that has all of the sizes, I'll be changing the headlights and the DRL's as well.

I'm loving the new blues.

You dont have to take the bumper off to change fog bulbs. You can reach in the grilles and get at the socket...

Not with my hands / arms.

Also, if you can get the clip off of the bulb with one hand, without looking while stuffing it through the grill, I'll give you a crisp $50.

Yeah, looks good evoic. Let me know what you find out about the other bulbs. I am going to wait now till I get all the bulbs I need and change them all while the bumper is off for the clear corner mod.

I will do some searching later to see if I can find any other bulbs as well.

For all bulb sizes use this site: Osram Sylvania Replacement Guide (http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProducts/AutomotiveLighting/LampReplacementGuide/)

I have Hoen all around and I would highly suggest getting the City Lights from them when you buy your highs and lows otherwise you will despise the yellow messing with your clean look.

Good plan on waiting till the bumper is off parks853, I had a helluva time trying to replace the low beams with these damn gorilla hands of mine.

you can do it from under the car by taking the front half of the skid plate off plenty of room that way and you can see the bulb clip that way

That was my first thought after I realized I wasn't going to be able to go through the grill, actually.

Either:

A.) I forgot once I had the skid plate off and just kept removing stuff....[:D]

B.) I looked and didn't see what I wanted to see after the plate was off so I kept going.

Ok.. looks like our cars have 4 lights in the headlight assembly and the foglight below. We have the day time running light, city light, HID, and parking light. I am sure everyone knows that but I have never taken the time to see which lights are on when. I have HIDs and my car is programmed for Euro style lighting so there maybe some differences.

I looked on Osram Sylvania's website to get the numbers then matched them with Hoen lights.

One more thing.. Sylvania's site list our cars as having a high beam light.. I thought with HIDs they just raised up and we don’t have another bulb so not sure why their site lists a high beam bulb.

City Light (small bulb above day time running light) – on with the HIDs in the low or high beam position or when the parking lights are selected.
Hoen W5W (Osram – 2825, others 194) - http://www.hoen-usa.com/city2.htm

Day Time Running Light – When turned on and everything else is off.
Did not find these yet? they are 1156 who makes a xenonmatch or LED?
I remember someone using some white LED’s to replace one set of their lights
I found this tutorial (helps a little bit) - http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93645&highlight=led
also looks like a 220ohm 5W resistor in parallel will get rid of the bulb indicator warning when using LEDs

Parking Lights – on with the headlights, parking light position, or turn signals
Euro style - turning signals only.
Chromium 7506 (might be some better options for this one and assuming the corners are going to be cleared) - http://www.hoen-usa.com/cr.htm

Fog Lights – HIDs on and the switch pulled out
Hoen H11-55W - http://www.hoen-usa.com/fog.htm

If any of these are wrong let me know. I just want a good reference to the lights and sizes.

Yes your correct with the HID's and High beams. High/Low is the same thing - Halogen has 2 bulbs.

DRL's and Turn Signal Lights = 1156

City Lights = 194

Fog Light = H11

I got the Xenon Match headlights in as well without taking my grill off. I also have xenon match city light's and DRL's. Looks awesome.

H11 is the bulb size and the xenonmatch is the series. It is the same wattage as the stock bulbs. It is the one you want. It is also what evo has pictured above in the before and after pics.

If you have the newer vag software you dont really need to know the code. It has a helper pop-up window. You switch from USA to Euro code for the lights. But here this maybe some help:

Only vag-code is to get rid of the parking lights and the fogs will work with high beams.

Just a note for those of you with halogens thinking of upgrading the bulbs. Buy new DRL's or city bulbs or w/e they're called. (you know, those little ones that are always on no matter what)

Because.... it will look lame with those stock while your lows and highs are blueish (IMO).

I wish I would have ordered them all together.

I have some prototype LED H11 bulbs that they were testing on my car. Color matches the HID headlights perfectly but we are currently working on the voltage and load issues with the car detecting the bulb. I'll try to snap some pics later of it.

Currently there is no way to run JUST the fogs and no headlights. When your parking lights are on, you can pull the switch out for the fogs but they do not go on.

Check the FAQ Thread for the VAG codes to get rid of the turn signal lights when the headlights are on.

What is the current draw of your H11 LED light? What is the minimum that the ECU expects to see? That is going to be a bit though. The fogs are 55W.

I would assume:

I(minimum ecu) = I(LED) + I(dummy load)

R = P/I(dummy load)^2

or R = P/(I(minimum ecu) - I(LED))^2

I would check with the car's electrical system fully loaded down, and when it is not loaded at all.

fully loaded would test the dummy load draws enough current to keep the light warning off.

not loaded at all will test your dummy load for a correct wattage rating.

I'm at work and did that really quick and was intrrupted a few times. let me konw if that is correct.

o yeah.. could you use a decade box to determine the minimum ecu current? Hopefully one that can handle 55W.

Someone made a write-up for the fog light removal on an S-Line on AW (I think it was SteveMondragon?) but I'm too lazy to find it.

You dont have to remove your headlight or bumper to get your city lights or DRL's out. There is a cap on the side of the headlight that you can take off to reach in and pull out the bulbs. Here is a pic of the cover off if it helps at all - i had a bunch more for a write-up but apparently i deleted them when i gave up on the LED project:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y99/JBurgman/DSC01833.jpg

That is the city light... See the grey ballast inside? Thats the DRL ballast... turn that to the left and it will pull out. Bulb swap is very simply and will only take a couple minutes.

This will probably sound pretty stupid to most of you.

What the hell is the differece between the city lights and DRL's?

I know that DRL's the one that's on when everythingelse is off. i can turn it off/on with a little knob by the steering wheel.

And which one's the city light??

TIA!

John1.8T
12-06-2006, 04:38 PM
The city light is the small light in the upper corner of the DRL housing.

Its the one that i pulled out on that picture.

go turn on your parking lights and look at your headlights... you'll see a small bulb lit up in the middle - thats the city light.

the easiest way by far for the s-lines is to remove the skid plate from underneath the engine.. dont go under your car while its on a jack.. just swing by any muffler or tire shop and ask them to throw the car up on the hoist.. then its about 10 screws and the plastic skid plate pops right off giving you clear access to the bulbs... i did this last weekend... gave the garage manager $20 bucks and one of the guys did the install for me... took less than 10 minutes all in
