*my reccomendations:
-slotted only if your purely concerned with performance gain or drilled/slotted if you want the 'look" too.
- if you want the drilled look get drilled. tho dimples are a great, unique, safe alternative to drilling they can cause noise when driving/braking.
-utilize the silver zinc thats included in price and add the black hubs for a clean finish. its better then black zinc and its a great detail behind a nice wheel and painted calipers.
-read this entire thread thru, i bet 90% of your questions are answered!
*bedding:
after EVERY new brake job is complete, immediately after installation is wrapped up the brakes must be broken in...
especially when swapping both the rotors AND pads, this is a crucial step in not only prepping both surfaces for a strong bite and safe braking, but will avoid sound issues, (covered next below) promote even wear, and all around smooth, clean, correct disc brake function.
high speed pulls to hard tapping stops on and off the pedalx10 followed by high speed pulls to hard lock-up stopsx10 will heat the rotors up, burn off the top layers of both the pad and rotor, and truley avoid any glazing concerns...this can cause hard bad shaking/skipping of the rotors, along with loud noise, and an inefficient disc brake set-up.
basically, beat the hell out of them right off the bat and let them cool with the brakes released and NO e-brake to avoid warping (like after any hard driving)
*sound:
it's just the dimples/drills. there is no reason the sound should be anything but mild. pleasant even. a bad bed, cheap pads, or an improper install could cause anything loud. I've ran these on my past 3 cars and there is a faint click or tap due to the camfered holes. almost like locust but it's nothing obnoxious.
I've sold hundreds of sets with many happy customers. drilled should cut down on this more so then dimples, but not completely...
again, the bedding process which should be done right then and there upon install can drastically effect stopping power and sound.
high speed tap braking. and a full 0-30 pulls and slam on brakes to 0mph is key...
with dimples primarily, some applications can be noisier then other (R32s in particular) as the air can be trapped between the dimple pocket and pad when driving (braking or not) and cause the popping or "locust like" sound.
*dimpled vs. drilled:
a drill hole is well, a drilled through hole and a dimple...is a dimple. both forms of rotor machining have zero effect on daily driven performance/stopping, and same for most track driving to be honest. new age pads don't create the gas that drill holes are meant to break up and dissipate. now slots, are where we see the benefit. these disperse heat and keep the rotor surface cooler then a blank rotor, and cool brakes is good thing. i do 50% of my orders dimpled/slotted as mentioned. its a unique face style many manuf. do not offer, its gives the look we all want, and no chance of cracking like some drill holes do. we chamfer both our dimpled and drill holes to prevent this, along with warranty, but is still peace of mind...the only other concern is sound (as covered above) that dimples can throw (more so then drilled but both can) due to the pockets "trapping" air between the dimple/drill and pad face.
*colored zinc:
the colored zinc will only remain on the NON-pad contact areas. the face of the rotor will obviously wear silver instantly upon the initial bedding process after install, leaving a very subtle accent color (and rust protection) on the remainder of the rotor. (hub/hat, dimples, slots, vents, etc.)
this is like ANY zinc dipped corrosion protected rotor, but with black/gold has a very nice touch behind a custom wheel/painted caliper.
*larger rotors:
you cant just put "bigger rotors" on your car. each mm measurement larger (or smaller) would require a new/different carrier to hold the caliper the appropriate distance from the hub to grab the rotor as it spins safety, and efficiently within it.
my rotors are ALL built to OEM spec, YOU tell me what application you want.
i often DO sell b5s4 set-ups for other cars/applications (larger rotors) to those who have already sourced the caliper/carrier set-up needed for a "OEM+ bbk" but is still an OEM set-up and works only on compatible applications.
you would have to have the caliper/carrier to accept the larger rotors...same with adding a8's or tt or 3.0 rotors being modded/added to a base model b6a4...the carrier is needed
this is a mod...or upgrade. the only time its plug n play or direct bolt on, is an OEM based kit made for YOUR car...
im happy to build a set up larger for you, but its your responsibility and requirement to do your own HW/sourcing for the rest of the components needed, and in the end i must be building to an OEM spec
