    that would be fun...

But, back to the video...i have not seen any videos of any RS4 really keeping up or beating on other comparable cars. Sure, i love the RS4, and everyone says speed doesnt matter, it's the total package you get. But in all honesty, people buy these cars taking their speed into consideration. To me, it's just sad to see a beautiful engine like the RS4's stuffed into a pig of a car and really slow it down. Same goes for the rest of their cars.
I personally was leaning on the RS4 or S5, but now, after meeting someone with the new e92 M3, THAT thing is a beast and within the next year or two, see myself in one. Everything about it was just perfect. The interior is not great, but it's not bad either. Engine is just pure sex!

to me i love the RS4...its fast enough. same thing i thought about the S4. its fast enough for what it is. living in chicago makes owning a RWD car as a primary a tough thing. especially with last winter and my commute. otherwise I would have bought an E46 M3 a while ago and would most likely be driving RWD cars IF i lived in CALI or ARIZONA.

Hey look if you want a tin can with cardboard seats, get an Evo. I hope Audi never sacrafices ride/interior quality for speed like every other damn auto maker.

why are your panties in a bunch? The M3 is far from a tin can and cardboard seats. There are ways to reduce weight and distribute weight more evenly.

You talk like weight and driveline loss isn't a factor here.

On it's best day, an RS4 is hardly faster than an M3.

Top gear ran a test of the E46 M3 vs the RS4 when the RS4 just came out. RS4 easily beat the M3 in straight line and around a track. Sure if you get well into 3-digit speeds, the M3 may catch up and pass, but this unavoidable due to all-wheel-drive which is nothing more than a hindrance in staright line at higher speed. If 100+ mph pulling power is what you are after, get theC63 AMG. It'll spank the RS4 and the new M3.

Sure, i love the RS4, and everyone says speed doesnt matter, it's the total package you get.

Yes, and that is not to be taken lightly

But in all honesty, people buy these cars taking their speed into consideration.

Of course it is a consideration, just not the only factor. And how often do you drive at 120+mph anyway. How a car performs in the 0-80 range is much more important for real world performance. Futhermore, anyone who thinks the RS4 is slow, really needs to have their head examined.

To me, it's just sad to see a beautiful engine like the RS4's stuffed into a pig of a car and really slow it down.

Audi builds luxury performance cars. If that's not what you want, buy something else.

I personally was leaning on the RS4 or S5, but now, after meeting someone with the new e92 M3, THAT thing is a beast and within the next year or two, see myself in one. Everything about it was just perfect. The interior is not great, but it's not bad either. Engine is just pure sex!

And what you are forgetting is the driver factor. The RS4's power is far easier to put down. In the hands of 99.9% of drivers, it can be driven harder with a far greater safety and control than the M3 can. Sure it can't keep up above 120mph. So what? How about nailing the throttle while making a left hand turn at a stoplight on damp pavement? The RS4 would be long gone before the M3 can even hook-up. Or, even better.....if you had to take one of these cars on a high, twisty mountain road, with lots of cliffs, sharp bends, etc, and drive the car hard, which car would you feel more confident in? Throw in a little rain or snow and it's game over!!!

That was 5th gear and not Top Gear. It was also in the wet which gives the RS4 an advantage. I'm not saying the M3 should win, but that's not exactly a relevant comparison.

Precisely. It still eludes me as to why these TV programs/magazines/journalists only want to compare cars under perfect ideal dry conditions on a track or road. Come visit me when there is more than a light dusting of snow and we'll see who comes out on top.

who's dumb enough to drive their cars hard during rain or snow?

the comparison of "hard" driving RWD vehicles and AWD in the wet/snow, is just unreasonable. Im NOT trying to pick a fight with anyone here, but I just posted my opinion about something I experienced myself, with some facts. I am not saying that the RS4 is slow either, not by a long shot. But, up against today's competition, Audi is where it usually is, by the time all the competitors are out with their answer to each other. BMW and MB are both luxury performance car builders too.
Besides better in bad weather, tell me what else you get, that is BETTER than the competition....Im asking for your opinion, because when topics like this come up, I get tired of reading about how Audi's quattro will OWN a RWD in the rain/snow. It's just not practical for people to just rip through the gears when it's raining or snowing.

I'm not here to ever bash on anyone or anything, because I have been through 3 consecutive Audis and I love them. Im just posting up my opinions, as everybody else does.

The point of the RS4 is performance, meaning speed and handling, or else everyone would just get an A4. So with that in mind, with the price you pay, you should be at least par with the competition, and the RS4 gets beat by almost every car in the European market in its class with comparable value. The RS4 not only costs more than the E92, it has the same amenities and ergonomics if not less than the m3, and it gets beat by a car that was built almost 10 years ago. That is why I think its sad, if driveline loss and weight was a problem they should have put a more powerful engine in the RS4 to at least keep up with the old M3 not to mention the new one.

People keep saying that in the rain and snow it does better... that is the most ridiculous comment. I hardly doubt that people actually go out in a rain storm, or snow storm to have a race, thats what the 4wd trucks are for. Sure it may have better traction, and it can kick an M3s ass in the snow, but who really races in wet and snow?!?!

some of you guys are s4/rs4 nut huggers....the S4 is a great car (i own a stage 3 B5)....but b6/b7 s4's/rs4 are really not all that impressive...especially for the money. Coming from someone who previously owned 2 m3's, I can say in the handling and speed department stock to stock the m3 is FAR superior. The S4 is very, very heavy (3-400lbs heavier than an E46 M3, and 5-600lbs heavier than an E36 M3), and understeers in a scary way. Even the allmighty RS4 (which is a WONDERFUL car) still is a very heavy pig of a car, sure it's leaps and bounds better than an S4. If you'e driven both cars at the limit, you would understand what i'm speaking of, the M3 is just such a well ballanced car with NO suprises, and is prob. the most predictable car i've ever driven. Also, in a stright line, an E46 M3 will beat an b6/b7 s4 like a red-headed step-child....fact. Would be a very, very close race with an RS4...
    Stage 3....blah...blah...blah...

Who cares in rain and snow? Haha, i feel sorry for those of you who don't have fun in those conditions. I love pushing the car hard when it's raining around tight corners and seeing where the limits of the AWD end. I love to snowboard also, and the best conditions arise when there is fresh snow on the ground and the ploughs haven't had time to hit the road. If i had a RWD car, i'd be stuck at home moping around instead of playing in the snow. I'm not saying the RS4 is the BEST sports sedan, i'm saying it is the most well-rounded and can perform admirably in all weather conditions.
I'd love to see just ONE review where they put a MB and BMW against an Audi in all types of inclement weather conditions. If you have one to see, pleeeease put a link up, enlighten us all!

I would much rather drive a Hummer H1 or Jeep Rubicon in extreme weather conditions than a low front-end german sports car. An Evo or STI would handle this car out in any condition. Either way I get your point and its understandable, but there are better cars out there and its not an opinion its a fact. Keep in mind I drive an Audi as well, but the pricing is wayyyy rediculous. They arent even par with BMW and Benz but they price the car more than BMW and almost the same as benz.

Lots of audi bashing....I bought my two audis for a lot of reasons...they all out weighed the rest....Ive had my share of subarus and my share of Porsches...and Audi seems to put the stuff I liked in both of those cars into a nice neat package. BTW Id take an R8 over anything BMW has to offer...sorry. Take pride in what you drive.

BTW in that video the M3 had a jump..watch closely youll see the nose of the rs4 pick up AFTER the m3 has begun to accel. hard. It gets a jump and the rs4 holds the m3 at that jump and begins to reel him in.

i do remember the top gear from season 2 i think, where they tested the b6 s4 vs the e46 m3, the m3 sure beat it in a straight line, but not by much, but the s4 was faster around the test track, by almost a couple of seconds.

the s4 gets raped in that one... thats like hard pulling not even walking. I can not imagine someone beating an M3 with the S4... I see it all the time on this website but after seeing that, its hard to imagine that with two good drivers that the s4 would win.

something is def. up with that M3 it's not stock, i raced my friends 03 M3 6 speed, he had good tires so off the line i would jump on him by a car, he would catch me slowly but by the end of 3rd gear i still ended up beating him by a fender. I never ran one on the highway but im pretty confident the S4 would have no issues at all, after all i ran a 535XI that had a Chip and intake , we did about 10 highway runs 45mph+ and we were dead even 'till about 110 after that the S4 started pulling hard.
