    Gas smell in car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My daughter, who has a 2004 1.8 with about 120k miles, just texted me that her car smells like gas, almost like it is coming through the vents, and that it started hard today, which never happens. Thoughts on where to start or most likely causes?

How so? Heater is a simple coolant/rad system. Heater would smell of coolant not gas.

First place i would check is under the rear seat.
I'd check the pump and sender gaskets on the passenger and driver side respectively.

There are other places under the hood to check.
I don't know where they are, but I think some gas lines run near where the cabin filter is.

I agree. Probably something to do with the N80 valve. Here's a picture for reference OP:

Thanks guys. Will the purge valve show some visible sign of being bad? Assuming I don't see any leaks at the lines or fuel rail or injector seals, how can I know if the purge valve is bad?

Did this happen after filling up?

Mine had a slight crack in one of the fuel tank lids, specifically the driver side, that would leach gas for a little bit after filling up. The smell was more prevalent outside the car toward the rear, though.

tell her to stop driving immediately. while it can be the n80 simply leaking, I have had the orings on my injectors leak on two separate cars. and if its a strong smell and starts hard this is likely the case, it will pool up on the engine and can very easily catch fire. I would check with a flashlight for wet areas around the injectors.

Yea you need to tell her to park that car and stop driving it.

I had my n80 purge side disconnected for years and never smelled fuel in the cabin.

Look at the fuel rail/ injector area like blitz said first thing!

This is how cars burn to nothing.

Since I don't like when people report a problem and not the solution, here is what happened. I went to her work 16 miles away and opened the hood and had her start it, thinking I'd be puzzling for hours over the source. Well let me tell you, even I can see gas shooting out the end of the fuel rail at a rate of probably a cup a minute. She must have dumped half a tank driving a full day like that. Replaced the Schrader valve core on the end of the rail in 5 minutes - after driving an hour to get one and the valve stem tool - and all was good. But yeah, fire is a real risk in that situation.

Yea a N80 purge won't do that to that extent, I don't care what anyone on here say's.

Glad to hear you got it fixed.
