A little different twist on the rear brake caliper

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Finally grew tired of the sad looking rear brake caliper on the s4 and wanted to do something to dress it up a little more like the front.

Been think'n about this for a while now, and finally took a little inspiration from the SQ5 rear cover plate (thank you Mops for the assist here!).

The problem however is the geometry & curvature of the s4 rear caliper. But more importantly, finding a reasonable way to attach any type of cover plate. The newer SQ5 caliper comes with pre-milled mounting holes (just like the stock s4 front calipers).

There is really no good way top attach anything to the rear s4 caliper. Thought about maybe using glue and/or magnets, maybe even welding a spring clip to the back of a cover plate. But that didn't seem practical either. So I had to come up with a workaround...

Started out with grinding down a small amount of the caliper to give me a flat surface(like the SQ5).

Then, drilled out a hole 5/16th deep & tapped it for some 6/32 stainless screws.

Next, made some plate covers out of .080 Alu stock (to match the fronts), stickered and spayed with high temp clear gloss.

Pretty happy with the final outcome, as this entirely changes the appearance of the brake set.

So now the flamesuit is all zipped up and ready for your thoughts...

arent there calipers that are bolt on to our current car that can accomplish this?

As everyone has said no flamesuit needed bro. That is a awesome job. If you decide to make more and sell them it looks like you have a good start because I would buy a set aswell.. might even be something you can bring up to the BIG suppliers and manufactures. Might be something ALOT bigger your sitting on..........

Thanks guys for all the positive vibes here! As for the flamesuit... wasn't so sure about this at first and I have seen a few threads get sideways too quickly as the Zine can sometimes be a rough crowd. Anyway, glad there is some enthusiasm for this idea. But I am not so sure about making them in quantity. The size of the alu plate really needs to be custom fit to the size of the grind off the caliper. I would be happy to help explore this if it is feasible as making prototypes can be time-consuming. Once the clipers are off, probably looking about 4-5 hrs of work to complete. thanks again...

Yeah... thought about Alu rivets as this was my first choice. I agree that this might be an even cleaner look. But wasn't so sure how they would hold up with the persistent temperature fluctuations over time. Could they keep constant holding power? Would love to hear thoughts from someone that knows metals and what that prognosis might look like.

    That looks good.

However, just to understand what I'm looking at, are the rears painted black on the bottom half? What I see in the previous picture shows a long aluminum piece but on the caliper it is smaller.

Also, maybe not a big deal, but if the plate does cover the opening in the caliper, won't it trap brake dust in there?

Nice job! I actually did something similar but went with epoxy instead.

Any reason why you went with 0.08 aluminum? Was this just for aesthetics reason? I went with 0.04 because it was easier to handle.

I am not sure the minimal amounts of brake dust will be any big deal here. Especially on the rear brakes? However if it might be, the screws will allow for easy removal and cleaning if necessary. As for the black on the bottom half, yes it is just painted to match the caliper. You cant really tell its all one piece, even when viewing in in person. I did try without the paint at first but it just didn't look right to me (too much silver). The attempt to mimic the front design just seemed to flow much better...

I did the same in my first attempt, but then used the .08 to better mimic the thickness of the front caliper emblem plates..

looks a little "homemade" with the phillips screws, if the bolts matched the ecs rotors, or there were none at all, it would look better, imho.

agreed... I do think the rivet idea might be the cleanest looking as I cannot think of a way to attach it from the back like on the front rotors. Also, I did not want to drill that large of a hole in fear it might compromise the integrity of the caliper.

I don't think it needs to be the same size bolt, just the same bolt head shape (hex? torx?), to look clean.

Update: just ordered some low profile hex drive button head cap screws. I do believe this might solve the dilemma of looking a little "homemade". I will repost some pics on the weekend. Thanks guys for the honest feedback here...

thanks Rich! I currently don't have an extra rear brake set to make these up right now. However, it seems that more than a few here might like to get these, so I am looking into obtaining all the necessary materials to make this happen. Would be so much easier if you weren't 3000 miles away? Stay tuned...

where do you purchase this alu stock?

How much did you grind off? How much time did you spend grinding, may do this on my next pad change. I need something to flow better with my Stoptech ST60

Only ground down about an 1/8". Just enough to provide a flat area for a consistent mounting surface. actual grinding maybe took me 15 mins with a grinder and a file.

thanks Rich! I currently don't have an extra rear brake set to make these up right now. However, it seems that more than a few here might like to get these, so I am looking into obtaining all the necessary materials to make this happen. Would be so much easier if you weren't 3000 miles away? Stay tuned...
True enough! I'd be down with buying the plates and doing the caliper myself if you have any interest in doing that. I hate the way they look, plus I have EBC redstuff pads and they show through around the black caliper. Not my favorite thing.
