    Lightbulb A6/C6 Inboard Hi Beams Don't Work and the Horn is Low Volume

    Here's a curious one for me.

    I just picked up a nice 2008 A6 Avant with the 3.2FSI V6 engine.

    The inboard mounted high beam headlights do not work.
    The HID low beams work and when I go to hi beams the shutter on the low beams opens up and the blue in-dash high beam indicator also functions.
    No errors on the dash (so the bulbs are OK) and no relevant errors when I scanned with the VCDS.
    The DRLs aren't active.

    Also the horn volume is very low.

    I'm thinking that somehow - perhaps due to a recent battery change - the system reverted to a Euro city configuration.

    Thoughts on how to rectify this issue or is it time for the seller to bring it to the stealership for a financial extravaganza?

    Hi James! From what you're describing of the headlight operation, there's nothing wrong. The think one would think is a high beam is just the DRL on an 08 housing. On xenon headlights, low and high are a function solely of the projector (E55 bi-xenon, you hit the highbeams, the shutter moves, then back when you let off). But yes, when your headlights are on (low or high beam), that DRL is off.

    As for the horn, it could just be that it needs replacement. Can you tell if it's the low or high tone horn that needs replacement? It's not a hard job at all but it does require you to remove the bumper cover to access the pair (directly behind the Audi rings). Before replacing them, take a multimeter to each horn's connector just to make sure when you press the horn that they are getting the full 12v power. But it's likely to just be a bad horn.

    And sorry, just to add to the DRLs. I just noticed you mentioned that they aren't active. If you access the CAR info on the MMI (and I do not recall if it's up front in the CAR button's menu, or the CAR > SETUP menu), there's an option specifically for "Daytime Running Lights" to turn OFF or ON. So you may also want to check on that if the DRLs are not on when your headlights are off.

    Hey guys - you were both spot on!
    I activated the DRLs and can see that the reflectors I thought were hi beams are in fact the DRLs.
    Quite the waste of reflector space - imagine the hi beams they could have stuck in there for not much more investment.
    As for the horns it sounds like both tones are in fact there - maybe it sounds quiet because they're recessed in the grill area and the car has more soundproofing then I'm used to.

    For the last 15 years or so I've owned a variety of A4 variants which have less noise insulation.
    As you can see from my AZ number I've been around for a while - I just haven't been spending a lot of my attention on the Audi's but rather on my track orientated vehicles.

    Perhaps come springtime I'll pull the bumper skin (ugh - PITA) and install some louder Hella supertone rally horns.
    Also I'll probably install some LED driving and or fog lights behind the grill - that should be fun!

    I love Hella horns! Great decision on that! I'm currently on Nokya 2500k on my fogs and love them, but I've yet to see someone post up some LED foglight comparisons for our car, so I'd love to see yours when you get around to it!

    Actually I wasn't planning on replacing the OEM fog lights with LED bulbs - I tend to doubt that they would offer any improvement - except for throwing an error code (due to their lower current draw) - although they do make the bulbs with built in resistors to up the load.
    What I was thinking about was adding auxiliary lighting units that would either shine through the grill or perhaps mount down by the OEM fog lights.
    It's so damn cold out here this week that I'm not going to think it over until the spring time.

    oooo OK I get you! You know, some other folks have talked about that very thing. an LED lightbar behind the grill. I think someone here has done it but I haven't ran across any pics yet.

    Completely understand. I'm holding off on any car work (if I can wait) until Spring. This 6* shit we had this morning was ridiculous.

    No, but they are astonishingly bright.
    The outer ones are spot lights whereas the inner ones are fog lamps - the fogs actually have a lens in front of the LEDs while the spots have a reflector behind.
    Also, these cost about $30 a pair (Amazon) and I don't see much difference between them and units that cost significantly more and the build quality is exceptional.
    In fact I suspect the more expensive LED lights are the exact same (Chinese) lights that they put a fancy label on.

    Completely understand. Those cheaper brands have a stigma but some of those are just as good, if not better. You just have to know what you're looking for and it seems you hit the nail on the head with these lights. And that price is great! If it were on my C6, I would prefer to place them behind the grill (with cutouts made on the grill for them). Relocating the horns to allow for depth clearance. But that's just because I always try to think ahead for when I get ready to sell the car. If I have to put it back to stock, it's already cheaper for me to replace the grill than the entire bumper :-) . So that would be my recommendation! Like stealth-mount array of LED lamps behind the grill :-D Regardless of what you end up doing, please share with us some before and after pics of the output!

    Since the car is well into the depreciation curve I'm not too worried about the resale value.
    My thinking is to install a cross bar across the upper area behind the grill and mount the driving lights behind without cutting the grill. Then do the same on the lower section (below the plate) with the fogs but to cut part of the grill there - it will be rather low profile and not overly obvious.
    As far as switching I'm thinking mounting a small flush lighted pushbutton switch to the left and right below the headlight switch. These are about a "dime" in size. That still remains to be seen as I don't know what the clearance is like back there.

    I've been into aftermarket lights for a long time - I used to pro rally race - and as such am very impressed with these new lights (especially as I age and my eyes ain't what they used to be).

    Replaced the horns today with some Hella super tone horns that I got from Amazon.
    Installation necessitated the removal of the front bumper (oh joy).
    New horns bolted up to the same bracket as the old ones.
    Wiring was straight forward - I used heat shrink butt connectors.
    I wanted to install LED driving and fog lights behind the grill but thatís going to require some custom brackets - that will have to wait for warmer weather.
    While I was there I also replaced the DRL bulbs with some Sylvania SilverStars.
    No way I could get to them from the rear so I pulled the head light assemblies while the bumper was off. Even then itís a struggle to get the bulbs out - see pix.

    nice dude! what are your impressions on the horns? louder n better? Surprised you didnt put a pic of the silverstar'd DRLs! I've debated putting an LED in there but figured I'd wait until one of these yellow halogen DRLs pop lol

    The horns are louder and a bit more abrasive. But theyíll be perfect for when someone isnít paying attention.
    Iíll get up a picture of the DRLs.
    Iím thinking of putting the driving lights adjacent to the OEM fogs.
    BTW - put the SilverStar H11ís in the fogs.

    Driving lights next to the OE fogs sounds perfect. There's nothing but dead space there and what IS there can easily be trimmed. That would look clean! I'm sure it would significantly help with the crappy light output of our projectors. I'm closing following JPJ2007's thread on his headlights. If it works out for him, I'll be doing that later this year (upgrading the actual lense of the projectors).

    The issue there are the low mounting position (angle) and a stable mounting surface.
    Fortunately the LED lights are very light and a backing plate may give enough stability.

    The silverstar bulbs are much whiter than the OEM bulbs.

    No custom brackets needed if you just use the aluminum crash bar... I painted my bar black. I also got a facelift style grill on ebay for about 70?

    I presume you donít have a requirement for a front plate.
    What did you do for a switch to activate it?

    Hereís my plan - I put together a flat bracket that will mount behind the license plate and be affixed with the top 2 screws and also some industrial VHB (very high bond) double sided tape.
    The lights would be wired through waterproof connectors (to allow for bumper removal) to a relay that is controlled by the high beam circuit and a supplemental switch. I envision mounting a flush push button switch to the left and below the OEM headlight switch.
