S4/V6 oil cooler upgrade for 1.8T

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Several years ago the oil cooler on my 1.8T failed which allowed oil to enter the cooling system. I cheaped out and went with a Meyle brand oil cooler since the price was ~$60 vs. $200 for Genuine.
These days my oil temps reach nearly 250F regularly, so I'd like to do something about that especially for if/when I go bigger than a F21 (have a GT2860RS + APR mani + APR HFC + APR TIP sitting in my garage).

Came across the "S4 oil cooler upgrade", where the larger S4 oil cooler (which is the same for the V6) replaces the smaller 1.8T unit. This may be a good compromise for me considering I don't want an external oil cooler.

Haven't ordered any parts yet but I'm looking at these part numbers:
    028117021E S4 oil cooler
    028115721B S4 oil cooler/filter threaded shaft

Looks like the cooler comes with a gasket already so probably no need to buy one separately. FYI elsewhere the oil cooler (Genuine brand) is $50 less, shaft is $15 less.
It appears the oil block adapter may need a tab shaved to fit the oil cooler, but that looks manageable.

    Thoughts? Comments?

Been running this setup for over ten years (along with the big kahuna WIX51333/NAPA1333 filter) with no problems. Definitely decreases warmup time, if that's important to you. Spend the money and go with OE on this, as OEM versions have reported problems. Having said that, there are other options, like here:

also, I believe the cooler off the Ford super duty trucks will fit.

So is it as easy as using the new V6 cooler and the longer rod? Or is there more involved?

As far as parts go, that's what it seems. Apparently the coolant lines will be slightly stretched/stressed due to the different position they would be in, and there's a tab on the oil filter block that needs to be ground down. I learned this from a Passat guy's build thread:

It's a little ways into the first post.

I have it as well. No issues. I even have a el cheepo oil cooler with no problems.

I believe I ground down a nipple on the block and that was the most difficult part, which is not difficult at all...

I wonder if there's a difference for this at all between 058 and 06A blocks also...

Mine is 058 AEB and I don't remember any grinding, but that was a while back. Check out ModifiedA4 's website, he was one of the first to write this up. I believe he's also running an 058 ATW...

His site has been down at least for the last week since I started looking into this.

I went back over my paperwork, I did have to grind down at least one of the triangular nubs. AEB motor.
