Changed oil pump and still low oil pressure

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My oil pressure light turned on a few days ago so I installed oil pressure gauge and at idle with the car up to temperature it would read about 10psi and on occasions it would drop to 6-7.. I replaced the oil pump along with the pick up tube and I still have low oil pressure same as before.. the old pump and pick up tube had no sludge at all but I decided to swap in the new one anyways just in case?! What should I be looking for?

What’s the specs on the car? Year?
    Model?
    Motor?
    Mileage?
    Modifications?
    Maintenance?

Changed oil pump and still low oil pressure

    Worn engine bearings. (Rod/main)
    Worn pressure relief valve
    Dirty/clogged filter
    Leak between pickup and pump
Leak or worn surface through oil passages(excessive clearances somewhere allowing flow but not pressure)
Worn oil pickup or return o-rings
    Worn valve guides
    Worn valve stem seals

Not saying this IS your issue... I had a customer car that suddenly had poor oil pressure, wound up being pressure relief valve stuck , #4 in following picture

If I simply disconnect the pcv system from the block will that rule out bad oil pressure due to pcv if it makes no difference?

In theory you would only need to undo oil cap while doing oil pressure test, rather than fooling with pcv which is easily broken, but I suppose it could be disconnected

I took off the oil cap multiple times with the car on and it made no difference to the oil pressure

What is the air temp where you live? What’s the oil temp?
Have you done any recent work?
    Cam seal?
    Timing tensioner seal?
    Valve cover gasket?
That enabled debris to collect in your passages?
Have you checked/changed oil filter(possible bad filter pressure relief spring ) not to be confused with the oil filter housing/oil pump pressure relief valve in 1st pic #4
Have you taken out the spring/piston/ pressure relief apart (#4)
I would look at filter, debris, pressure relief, and then move on to compression/leakdown/invasive testing...

ATW uses 058 (AEB) block; some of the links refer to the 06A (AWM) block. There are major differences between the two, in terms of lubrication system.

Air temp is getting down to like low 30s-50 degrees. After driving for a while the oil temp will get up to I believe 200-220 degrees. I haven't done an work on it recently besides oil change and plugs

I'm assuming the 10psi reading is at idle.

What are your oil pressure readings at other engine speeds with oil at 200F+? How about cold?

If you can fill in these charts that might give a better idea of what is going on:

    Cold Start
    Idle ----- - *
    1500 RPM - *
    2000 RPM - *
    3000 RPM - *
    4000 RPM - *
    5000 RPM - *

    Oil at 200F+
    Idle ----- - 10psi
    1500 RPM - *
    2000 RPM - *
    3000 RPM - *
    4000 RPM - *
    5000 RPM - *

I Don't think this is the problem but I would say go 5w40 next change with your miles being that high.

Changed oil pump and still low oil pressure

    My $.02 in no order:
Faulty oil filter ( it does happen)
    Faulty pressure relief valve
    Faulty/dirt spring/plunger asmbly
    Dirty/faulty anti-drain back parts

if the car were in my garage I’d be draining the oil, removing the filter-filter housing- and cleaning everything with parts cleaner or diesel and inspecting the springs and seals in the filter housing unit
Then I’d reassemble it with a Mann oil filter and 5w40 and retest.

    Here’s another possible helping hand
