    Plastic wheel bolt covers/caps?...

Anyone else here just remove those cheap looking plastic wheel bolt caps from their cars? I never really noticed them until I had a flat, and got another flat the other day and the tire dealer damaged some while prying them off. I figured instead of replacing them to just pull all of em off instead cause I donít really see a need for them. Just one more thing to do when changing a tire. Anyone else here just remove em?

Did the opposite. Purchased car with no plastic caps. Bare lug nuts looked like ass, so purchased plastic caps, now it looks good. There is a plastic tool to remove them and I always take them off before going to the tire shop.

Plus they keep dirt and water out of the threads.

Huh?...my Porsche and Benz both donít have plastic wheel bolt caps. You saying thereís dirt and water in them? :) I think they are solely for cosmetic reasons or at best, to keep the bolt heads from surface rust.

They are cosmetic, but who wants to look at some ugly rusty lug bolts when you have $1k invested in your pretty black rims. IIRC I spent like $8 for a full set plus tool for a set, I also bought a spare set since once in a while one will fly off or get lost at the tire shop. And the same caps fit on our BMW's so we don't have to look at the chrome lugs on the black M 437 rims we have on the 650i.

Granted if you run studs these are a moot point...

Ok, when the bolt heads get rusty, Iíll put the cheap plastic caps back on for the next owner. :)

It sounds like youíre talking about the center caps? Itís personal preference or depending on the style of the rim. Iíve got the split fives and I could never run it without center caps to me it just looks wrong. There are some rims that look better without the center caps this is not one of them in my eyes lol.

I'm on the fence, especially when my split 5s center caps are all worn.

I took mine all apart, cleaned them, sanded them, and refinished them with some good silver paint. They look much better now.

Caps on the actual lugs? I guess different wheels? I don't have those. I just assumed you were talking about the standard center caps which are always scuffed and the paint flaking off on nearly every B7 I see. Carry on!

Oh yeah, I have these Y-spoke wheels that came on mine. They donít use those big center caps, but do have plastic caps over the lug nuts...

Ok, hereís what I was talking about. Top is with the plastic cosmetic caps, below pic without. With probably looks better but I figure I save some unsprung weight (lol) with them off and donít have to deal with pulling them off when changing a flat. :)

Dude, How often do you get a flat? Besides the tool to remove the caps should be in your tool kit anyway.

Well I just got a flat last week, and brought it this time to a service center, and forgot to pull the caps beforehand and the tech damaged the caps and one even fell off after driving. Just an extra hassle IMO.
