    Exhaust sound - real or??

My 2014 S5 has a nice burble, but I'm not sure whether it's actually from the exhaust or is sound that's artificially produced from somewhere? Does the S5 have a switchable exhaust or is Audi screwing with my head?

they have exhaust coming through the speakers, but the dgs also has a burp sound. set your engine mode to comfort and that should turn off the speaker. if not I believe you can use vagcom to code it out, or pull the fuse for it

correction* prob not from speaker, but theres is def some sound enhancement

    Exhaust sound - real or??

There is no sound coming through the speakers in the S5! There is a "sound actuator" between the engine and cabin which, when engaged, allows some of the engine vibrations to pass into the cabin. No artificial sound.

Regarding the burble, it's quite easy to make sure it's not from the speakers: open the right window and drive next to a wall while upshifting. You'll hear it perfectly.

P.S. Here is a silly movie I made when the S5 was still stock, you can clearly hear the burble from outside the car (start at 24s)

Again, that is the sound actuator. It brings *engine* noise in the cabin, not exhaust noise, no connection to the dsg fart. Also, the sound is not generated, it's not a speaker. It's a physic device that transmits the engine's vibrations. You can clearly hear it work by keeping revs constant at 3000rpm while parked with the door open and switching between confort and dynamic. The engine noise is what this controls.
The dsg fart is a real sound which is not affected by the drive select setting on B8.5s.

The farts go away if you're not running Dynamic for your exhaust setting though, so I'm not sure what you mean by this.

That's simply not true :) I can make a video if you insist, but I'm 100% sure about this, I've been driving this car for almost two years now...

P.S. The B8.5 has no dynamic setting for "exhaust". It's called ENGINE sound. The B9 is a different story.

It simply is true, actually. I've had my car for over 2 years, and that was always the behavior I experienced until I modified the exhaust. The behavior was consistent even when running the shifts in manual mode and revving high. After making some changes to the stock exhaust (reso delete, x-pipe) the behavior changed, and I get the farts no matter what mode I'm in as long as I rev high enough. I couldn't tell you why this is the case, as the reso doesn't have any sort of special wizardry inside and these things don't run any sort of valved exhaust. My best guess would be that there's a difference in settings regarding whether or not unburnt fuel is to be sparked.

Yes, I did have the name of the option wrong. It is listed as Engine Sound.

Perhaps cars in Romania are spec'd different from here?

The exhaust noise generator is called the Soundaktor. It is the device that Audi simulates engine noise with.. It uses an audio file which is stored on the carís computer and then played during certain throttle applications. It broadcasts it through a dedicated speaker located near the engineís throttle body. Not sure about the 'engine vibrations' angle tho..

After reading this thread, I promptly hooked up the vagcom and zeroed out the "Soundaktor". Having a S2 tune, intake, and exhaust, I certainly don't need anything artificial on top of that. Ever since the tune, I've been noticing a very slight cabin noise/vibration/feedback intermittently under hard throttle that I've been unable to pinpoint. At times it sounds as if it's around the console cubby (so I suspected my 034 trans mount), but at other times it seems as if it may be coming out of a speaker. I'll give her a good drive tomorrow to see if the change has any effect.

Interesting, maybe there is a difference between US and EU spec cars after all... my car was purchased from Germany.

Yeah, maybe. I was completely baffled when my behavior changed just by removing the resonator and replacing it with an X-pipe. The exhaust system made even less sense to me after that.

Edit: FWIW, BMW's burbles and farts come from the tunes. Apparently one of the issues with the 4 series turbos blowing up is caused by the types of tunes people are running to make their cars burble and fart more. My Evo farts plenty, but I didn't tune that car to do it on purpose. It's just one of those things that happens when you run catless.

I used the Carista app to turn the Soundaktor down to 0 (actually 5%.) Hard to tell exactly, but I think the car is quieter, which is a good thing in a convertible. In any case, I'm going to leave it off.

Just thought of something else: the B8s also farted, despite having no "engine sound" option in drive select.

they did not, unless its the s4 or maybe s5 cab, which the 3.0t and DSG transmission. not sure if the cab got dsg. but the v8 s5 was tiptronic, no farts

    The Fart Explained.

This is my understanding as to why 3.0T mated to a DSG gearbox flutters or as some call it "farts" between gear changes.

Some of you may have noticed the flutter is more pronounced when the right peddle is pressed closer to the floor and this is why.

Operating the right peddle, opens and closes the throttle body and the throttle body controls how much air is allowed to pass into the engine. The engine computer controls the amount of fuel needed and the ignition, to combust the air fuel mixture and off we go. Most car people know this and know I am greatly simplifying the process.

Now during gear changes engine power is not needed.

    In a manual car, when a different gear is needed, under acceleration, the clutch is pushed in, at the same time the right peddle is released, new gear selected, clutch peddle release and right peddle re-engaged. {Remember, the right peddle is released and this is how the engine power is cut during the gear change.}

Now the DSG is controlled by a computer, but it is still a manual gearbox and for purposes here I am going to use manual gearbox terms. In a DSG car, when a different gear is needed, under acceleration, the clutch is engaged, the fuel is stopped, new gear selected, clutch released, fuel reestablished. I am sure you caught this, but the right peddle is not mentioned and this is because it is still being pressed and this means the throttle body is open allowing air into the engine. The fuel is stopped to cut the power to the engine. While the fuel is stopped the engine draws the air inside and compresses it (No fuel, no combustion.) then pushes it into the exhaust. The flutter (or fart) is the sound of the engine working as an air compressor, for the brief time, between gear changes. The flutter is more pronounced the more the throttle body is open, because of course more air is allowed in to be compressed.

Many of us, who follow Formula 1, will remember the teams exploiting the open throttle body, cutting fuel or cutting ignition, during deceleration, to use the engine's compressed air to feed the rear diffuser. And those of us who are familiar with this definitely remember the sound.

    I meant the v6t, not the v8. Meaning S4 and S5 sportback.

When I had the mufflers on, It wouldn't fart, but would make a whiplash/snare sound on every upshift.

Now that I have the mufflers off it sounds like a loud rifle going off every time I upshift.
Also backfires and crackles on downshifts when the car is warmed up :)

Both these are very noticeable under hard acceleration.

    Hey guys,
I was just talking about this with my GF this weekend. She said the exhaust sounds different depending on whether you're driving or the passenger. I have driven next to the divider on the the driver's side with the window down and have heard the true exhaust sound from my stock '14 6MT sportback. It's not bad. It does sound different from the driver's seat with the window up. In the passenger seat with the window down it also has a noticeable sound. Not crazy but enough to let you know this is a performance car. I may pull the fuse mentioned above to compare. I wold like to go aftermarket catback but I don't want any drone.

i think awe advertises no drone for their exhaust. but from experience, ANY exhaust will giv u some sort of drone, some are just lesser than others.
