There's been some whispers for quite some time that this is finally the RS 4 Avant that will be making its way here. If so, I'm fully onboard.

No avant, sure, but are we interpreting the lack of a sedan in this announcement as meaning there won't be a sedan (and, importantly, that we won't be getting it)?

I can't help but look. Living out a dream through a website. Crazy. Does Audi not know that what's old is new? If there is any one company that can bring back the love of wagons it's them. Sigh....

“The RS4 is our icon,” said Winkelmann. “It blends power with superlative utility.”

"We just don't feel the need to share this icon with any Americans and laugh at them when they ask if such an amazing car will make it state side" said Winkelmann crushing the hopes of US wagon lovers.

    Seriously....piss on Audi.

No TT RS roadster. No RS3 Sportback. No RS4 Avant. You can have anything you want, as long as its a sedan or SUV.

I'd be happy with an RS cab or a hot hatch/wagon. But noooooooooooooooooo

    lol

C63 S cabrio is looking better and better.

If the RS4 (or RS6) does not make it here in wagon form, the RS5 will be the last Audi that I buy. Never owned a sedan, never will; and the last few years with the Jeep have been a reminder why I hate SUVs... and the fact the B9 looks better as a wagon only makes it worse. E63 wagon is looking better every day.

Why is that? Stop buying SUVs then you be would get great cars like this. I'd drive this any day to the golf course, skiing and/or driving. It's a beautiful car. Too bad our country will get hosed as well.

Our only hope is that China was mentioned as a market. The RS3 sedan was built for North American and Chinese markets. That said, it's a pretty heavy lift we'll get this if the RS5 Sportback shows up. Sigh....

Oh man. I never ever imagined myself to be an avant type of guy, but... I think I'd get this over the RS5 Sportback any day. Is it the understated design? The somewhat euro-/Russian- mob type feel it has to it? The RS tailpipes and valence attached to the clearly station-wagon-looking rear area... haha that's amazing.

You are one of the reasons this car will not be coming. I do like your comment about the Jeep but that comment still will not help. Audi and others sell what the US buyers crave and unfortunately today that is SUVs. End of story as my lunch is ready. Cheers.

I would be happy with an RS4 sedan. Was too young to afford the last RS4 sedan and have wanted one ever since. Scant would be nice, but I would hate to think our option options are the RS3 (a little too small for me), RS5 (only seats 4) or RS7 (only seats 4).

Audi should really take another look at their focus group efforts rather simply relying on sales numbers. I don't follow the monthly sales numbers but I don't see many Q3s or A5/S5 Sportbacks on the streets of the Bay Area much. Then there's the under powered A4 Allroad. There aren't many of those. If Audi brought the RS4 Avant over I'm sure they'll be appealing to a whole new group of buyers. Both loyalists and new buyers. If VW can sell the GTI then Audi can sell the RS3 Sportback. Look at Subaru. They've sold tons of STI hatches. Audi will always innovate but it doesn't hurt to go back to their roots of Avants and let us here in the States appreciate them as well.

When I had my B6 Ultra Sport Avant I would always get some younger guys comment on it. I know the appreciation is there. If Audi can set aside some R8 RWS units for US orders I'm sure setting a fixed number of RS4 Avants can follow the same path. If Audi is paying attention I strongly suggest they do something like that.

Hey Audi. Never follow........the rest of the car industry. Bring the wagons.

The Bay Area is an anomaly. The rest of North America is filled with Q3s and Sportbacks. I see at least one of them a day. Station wagons do not sell here. The only people who clamor for them are a tiny vocal minority on car enthusiast forums. Young people don't want wagons either, they all want SUVs/CUVs especially if they have kids. They don't want a minivan and wagons are too low. They want something higher up.

Do you not thing that Audi/VAG spends tens of millions of dollars on focus groups and market research? If the demand was there they'd bring the RS4 over right away. The demand simply doesn't exist. Wishing it did won't make it happen.

Remember the CTS-V wagon? No one bought it. Mercedes has the sales numbers to bring over more niche vehicles (see the C63S convertible). If anyone had the ability to bring over a performance wagon it would be them. The only one they offer is the E63S and that's only by special order. Even they realize there is no market for a compact performance wagon.

The RSQ5 will fill the spot in North America of RS4 and they won't have trouble selling it.

This post is a good one. I never understand how or why fellow car enthusiast cannot look beyond themselves to understand that their interest in Audi wagons is niche. Some people (Not all) speak like they are the majority when they are in fact in the minority when it comes to the types of SUVs that America wants.

We may like them, but understand that their is not enough of us to justify bringing them here.

I think the majority of the avant/wagon crew in here know they are the minority and are just joking around.. i never really took it as they thought they were the majority

Plus the RS4 is an expensive performance vehicle. It's not like they would plan to sell tons of them. I don't know if you could consider it a niche vehicle but it certainly would sell in low numbers, and of course enthusiasts would be all over them.

Audi is becoming the vanilla rental fleet of German cars in America.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, understands that Q7 minivans will sell more than RS4 Avants. But that's not the entire point. Its an important point, yes....but driving interest in the brand is also important. This isn't just about the RS4 Avant. Its also about no TT RS roadster. No RS3 Sportback...its these unique vehicles that DO help build interest in the brand. Its not the very MOST profitable for Audi, but its an investment.

Take me as an example....I'm probably leaving Audi. And with me I'll take my strong Audi advocacy, my push to get friends/coworkers into the brand, and all of my maintenance/service dollars. I'd suggest that when Audi loses one of "us", they lose far more than a single sale.

And I totally understand if Audi only really cares about moving volume. Its a business decision.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, understands that Q7 minivans will sell more than RS4 Avants. But that's not the entire point. This is partly true, partly not. They think (maybe wrongly, maybe not) that they're making the uniqueness/brand point with the RS line, generally; and the fact that they're supposedly going to have 8 RS models in the US market at the same time w/in 2 years pretty clearly signals that that (and not low-demand cabrios, avants, etc) is the direction they're headed. Fundamentally, it works for BMW, it works for MB, they think it'll work for them. I personally tend to agree with you. Part of what makes Audi Audi is the playful, out-of-the box culture of the company that trickles down through their cars (and body styles) and even their owners. It's what uniquely sets them apart from BMW and MB, and the abandonment of these body styles in favor of the more conventional base/fast/superfast model-line setup is disappointing.
